✅ SOLVED War of 1812 Navy Button?

I found this 14mm one piece brass Navy button today. The device is on the back . I see one in Alberts on pg. 96, 75-b, I'm trying to find out:
1) It this Royal Navy or American?
2)What is the correct time frame?
3) Why did they put the device on the back? Also, I found 3 Monroe buttons with a blank front and Monroe on the back. Does anyone here know why?

I'm not expert on buttons, though I have found many. I would guess it was re-purposed. Nice find, though!

From what I've read, don't know if true or false, is that these buttons were originally made as military buttons, but re-purposed and sold as commercial buttons.

All I've seen on them, seems to suggest that they were all pre American Civil War.

How much of that, if any, is true, I honestly don't know.

There is a cuff button similar to it on Virginia relics website. I found it doing a Google image search on yours. Because I'm not an expert, don't know if their ID is correct.
