We might get a small huricane our way....how did I prepare?

Well I did what any TH would do I went today and got supplies heres the pic




4x4 now I can pack it up with my gear and be ready to go!

Seriously though what should I look for and how to hunt after a hurricane? Besides safety, because I won't take a chance there but after the storm I plan to out there.

You might not be able to access the beach, as they could be closed off to prevent looting. They do that here in Florida when hurricanes hit.

Depending on the level of the storm, you might want to head away yourself as they can tear stuff up several hundred miles away.

lol 4x4 is great to get back into area with, I also carry a chainsaw, extra fuel, batteries, lights, ice, water, MREs radio, and my doggies

hey the chainsaw is something I hadn't thought about good idea. I am far enough inland we might get some rain but thats about it. South Padre is an island and they will close it down where you can't get through and I wouldn't want to be there during the storm, but there are a few places I can hit on this side of the island until I can get across.

After a hurricane there is no telling what washed back into the surf. Ya gotta protect them little piggies as you don't know what your going to step on.

Post hurricane, best time to hunt.

If it hits closer to corpus thats even better, I know the area a lot better I grew up there, plus my dad and brother will be along if thats the case.

Ive never been through a hurricane but in the last year we have had killer tornadoes go over top of the house.
I have water, food, flashlights cellphones charged, fully charged portable ham radio w/spare battery as well as my digital camera taken to the basement.
I always change my clothes, jeans and workboots and have a jacket ready when I run down stairs if a twister is approaching.
I also am a trained Skywarn ham radio operator that watches out for extreem weather.
We also have pet food down stairs for the dog.
Keep your head down, keep a close watch on the weather channel as hurricanes do change course.
If the authorities tell you to evacuate I would be 8 hours ahead of them.

Bring everything mentioned above. My best tip is be ready to go to the beach as soon as they let you go in. You only have a a small window 12 to 24 hours before mother nature buries it all again. Look for cuts and erosion spots.

Ed that is what I was looking for the window before its covered up I was hoping it was a bit longer, but hey gotta work with it. I know people who actually hit the island yesterday to hole up until after the storm. Hubby wouldn't let me do that...but thats ok cause theres nothing I can do until after the storm anyway.

Here is my supply list

Excal and gear
water
dry food, jerky, protein bars
first aid kit

full gas tank
full gas can
extra clothes and blanket
rain gear

a few bucks cash

From what I saw on TV you will get mostly rain, 15 inches! My daughter lives in the area and the last time the big one hit in about 04 they stayed home and did not evac. But she did have a funny story to tell. Some poor guy put an X on his front door and wrote come and get me on the door. His house was the only one in the neighborhood that had damage. A tree fell on it. Sad but true. So always watch what you ask for. Do you have second floor? The treasure hunting on the beaches after the storm will be fantastic! In the seventies treasure mag. had a good story on Galveston after the storm and they were finding lots of silver dollars!

I am actually about 2 hrs inland, we are just now seeing some rain start and the wind pick up it will be several more hours before it reaches this far. I am just waiting for it to blow by and I will be heading out to detect. I probably won't be on again today so I will catch ya all up tomorrow.

Just wanted to point out that the main wind and rain came in from the NW in the Brownsville area so the best hunting should be on the mainland beaches not on the Island at the next low tide wait at least a couple days out on the Island since there's probly gonna be alot of damage and garbage Items floating.

We came through good here no damage in our area winds really never got over 40mph lots of rain though.
Got up this morning to sunny skies, watched the news, power to the island was out but the causeway was open!!!Yeah
I threw everything in the truck and headed out. I was going to stay on the mainland and not hit the island anyways, got a secret spot I wanted to hit. An hour into the the 2 hour drive, I hit a blockade on the freeway had to exit, and the exit ramp ended into a nice size lake, dang my luck I watched a big truck make it, and a small car that did not make it, and figured being I was in a med size truck I had a 50/50 chance...not odds I wanted to take(plus I promised my husband before I left I wouldn't go through any water, he wasn't too happy about me taking off to begin with) so I took the safe route and turned around. I was afraid that the flooding would be worse the closer to the coast I got. I was super upset cause I was really looking forward to it. My spot will still be there come Saturday cause only a couple of us hit it and I already talked to them. Anyway as luck would have it I got to use my 4x4 anyway today. Hubby went to the ranch to check on any damage that might of happened there and he got stuck so he had to call me to come pull him out. He doesn't have a 4x4 yet lol but when I got there he had tried to go around the road cause of standing water and he sunk in the mud. I was laughing and told him I don't know I promised that I wouldn't go through any water today...he wasn't in the joking mood. Any way he was like babe I should of told you to bring a shovel cause I gotta dig out. I was like babe, look in the bed of the truck. He kinda is digging the whole metal detecting hobby of mine now cause I am prepared! I got him pulled out and spent the rest of the day airing out the camper bedding because some yahoo(that I sometimes call my husband) left the vent in the bedroom up the last time he was there so water was everywhere.

I just couldn't get mad at him for it though I think getting stuck and having to call the wife with the 4x4 was punishment enough.

I have to work tomorrow but come Saturday if I have to go by boat I will be out there detecting!
