Weapon hammer? found at Boer war site. UPDATED!!!

Hi Guys and Gals,

This item was found at a Boer war site here in South Africa and looks like a hammer to a weapon, I am not fully conviced about this yet and need your expert input.

Any help will be apreciated very much.

Thanks misplacedrednek, that is exactly what we are talking about, except the one we have is from a rifle and not a hand pistol. I cannot imagine going into battle with one of these, and spending about 3 minutes to load 1 shot with the enemy charging down on me..... I think I would sooner run for my life
