Good evening everyone. Daytondigger had the day off on Wednesday so he called asking if he could join me in a hunt. I said, sure. Come on up. So we met and introduced ourselves before heading to a few of my favorite spots. We started out at the JA McDonald homesite built in 1837. (Ist picture.)I have been pounding this all summer but I wanted to see what we could still find. Unfortunately, we didn't turn up much . I found an old key and a 45 slug (modern). After a few hours there we headed over to another spot which I have hunted a few times. (2nd picture)It has produce a gold ring, silver, Injuns and a ton of Wheaties. There I found 3 Wheaties, a unicorn piece of some type, and a token. I don't know anything about it only that it is a cracker Jack token. I also forgot to mention that I found an old spoon. Don't know anything about it. Not too hot today. We then headed to another place which I have hunted just a little. (3rd picture) It's a tough one. Lots of iron and hard ground. We didn't stay there long. It looks very promissing but just tough. The 1909 Indian is the one I found the other day. It is not an S :( Thanks Daytondigger for taking your time off to metal detect with me. It's been a fine pleasure and hope to do it again HH Ron Smith

Looks like you two had a good day to me. I really like all the sites you chose to hunt.

I looked on google and found many articles about your token. Just type in Presidential
coins found in Cracker Jacks. Many, many articles will pop up.

Not sure if you have tried hunting in all metal or not, but I have two ACE 250's and I
have tried all the settings. I find that, any signal that falls on the right side of the
scale, DIG IT. You will be surprised at what you find. Of course I only use the all
metal mode in area's that have little trash. At the old home site you hunt, the one
you really have hit hard, I would try all metal and dig anything that falls on the right
side and sounds good, but you can't get it to lock onto a coin area.

Lots of luck to you Ron, I might just have to drive down there next spring and
hunt with you sometime.

Thanks. We can do that. Maybe we can all get together at one time :coffee2:

Cool stuff! Love the pics of the old homesteads!!!

Keep at it.

Hey Crazyjarhead!

I found the same token about a month ago! They were part of a Cracker Jack club from 1930 to 1934.
They still sell on Ebay, in decent shape from $6 to $14. That little bugger sure makes the detector yelp doesn't it?

The other finds are cool as can be.

Good Luck!

Mark

Hi CJH,
I'm a former marine as well. I also use an Ace 250. I have been hunting since Jan 1,2008. I hunt trashy parks. They have been a real learning experience. At first all I used was coin mode at factory settings. I have progressed to All Metal with reduced sensitivity (two notches). I then verify with either Jewlery mode or Coin Mode. I am hunting a not so local park that is on my way to work. I have taken out a lot of trash and Clad. Yesterday I got a .925 Silver ring and last week a Barber dime. There have been other MD'ers there as they have left holes in the Tot-Lot. (which I filled) They are not venturing into the body of the park as it is so trashy. All the better for me and you if you will go slow and dig a lot. I use the 6x9 coil. I suspect if I had the smaller 5" coil I could go faster but speed is not important as finding the real treasures. I have the larger coil that I have yet to use but am going to test it after I remove some more trash. HHHH

Thanks HH. I use the coin mode exclusively at the next to the last notch. Sometimes 2 notches from max. I have done well with this method. I used all metal like people have recommended and done alright. But doesn't only using to notches limit your depth? I dig a lot of 4 and 6 inch holes. Sometimes 8. I started out at the half way mark. Then I went back at near max sensitivity and found more. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. HH Ron
