I might as well throw away my detector! My two best finds were on the surface. I was hunting a turn row that had a scatter of broken square nails all over the surface when I found this... right next to a square nail which cancelled out it's signal... 3cent_obv.webp3cent_rev.webp...

1851 O silver 3 cent piece... I have always wanted to find one of these, and there it was staring me in the face!

Towards the end of the day, my friend found a stone celt on the surface, and as we were heading out to the truck, I found the lock... right on the surface...

The flattened lead used to be a minie ball, the musket ball has a quarter section sliced out of it. The brass whatzits are solid and heavy , with the pointed ends resembling a square nail...

The only writing I could find on the lock was here...

I'm not going to mention my friends name to protect his privacy, but I will mention that I met him here on TNET and that he is one of the nicest people I have met.

Nice Sword Hanger! You get a double   for that relic!

The lock is a Railroad lock. If you clean the lever on the left hand side, we can probably identify it for you. (You can see "_____RR 72 Newark" already...)

Nice finds--the 3 cent silver is a good looking coin.

That 3 center is beautiful. Look at the condition of that thing.

Great find I have allways wanted to find a 3 cent. How big is it? Is it the same as a dime or is it the same as the half dime? What does it read on a detector if you go over it. I would like to know if i stand a chance of finding one in Michigan. It took 30 years to find my first Half dime. Half as big of a dime and half has thick. It read twist cap on a whites eagle spectrum. Great find again and thanks for posting the pic.

It gave a broken signal when the nail was next to it. After picking it up and rescanning it, it read somewhere around the pull tab range. Size is 14mm, half dimes are 15mm. They nick named them fish scales for a reason...
