Weird guitar thing?

It looks more like some kind of Mandolin/Bass type instrument, though with only 4 tuning pegs, that kind of rules out a mandolin. Look on the inside of the sound hole for any kind of markings or paper label. Never seen anything like it.

A dulcimer usually has the fret board going across the body, the instrument in question looks like a fancy bodied ukulele to me.

It's a dulcimer. You can Google Seagull Merlin Dulcimer. It's almost identical to yours.

See if you have a Guitar Center near you. They'll ID it for you. If you don't send your pic to them in Email. They saved my old roommate from making a $350 mistake.

I know of an old man, hand makes dulcimers, mandolins, etc., was working on a huge 7 ft harp, when I last saw him. Wished I had gotten pics of the harp, thought you all might enjoy these.

These dulcimer-type instruments usually have the bass string tuned to D, the middle string tuned to A and then the pair of treble strings both tuned to a high D (D-A-dd). Alternative tunings include G-D-gg and C-G-cc.
