I was told this was a snap type button. It's definitely brass and the 3 fleur de lis (at least that is what I think they are) inside the shield is not gilt, it looks just painted on. The button is slightly bigger than a pencil eraser and was found in a yard where we dug CW bullets and sabot. I'm guessing it's later than CW period but would love to know more about it if anyone can help. The back of it looks like it says 2tc.

There have been a couple of other buttons like this posted showing the marks as "C.F.Co. and CFC (with the first C being backwards), but I haven't neither have ID'ed the manufacturer:

and

Added: But in this thread PBK states that he had seen these marks on glove buttons before (he's still solving things even if he isn't posting... he is a legend, and is missed): http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/41299-button-help-appreciated.html

Thanks for the input nhbenz, I had never seen that style of snap button before. I know three fleur de lis with a shield is possibly French. The button being painted on stumps me though,it's probably later than CW I would guess. The back could possibly be a backwards c an f and a c like those other buttons were marked but the marking are very feint. You've at least given me another idea for a google search.

Okay I am almost certain now in looking at the last link you posted that picture number 4 is exactly like what I'm seeing on my button! It looks like a backwards c, an f and then a c!
