Hi all,

Boy, how great is it to have nice weather again? It sends the locals to the parks, where they replenish the treasure in the wood chips!

Got out for two semi-short hunts this weekend. First, I stopped by grandmas house to pick her brain (she's lived in the same town for 80+ years, and is better by far than any library). After securing some names for a reported old picnic ground used by the local churches, firefighters and various other groups, she remembered her penny jar. After getting it down off her high closet shelf, and blowing the 1/8th inch of dust off the top layer, we spent a great two hours sorting through it. Ended up with something like 60 wheats (will post the specifics later), including the really weird silver colored 56D. This is definitely NOT a coin, but what the heck is it?

After leaving her house, I hit the wood chips in the local park and came up with my first Sac dollar. Ten minutes and 30 feet later, hit my second. Must have been the same kid. After a few clad coins, found the flat brass "token" pictured to the left of the Sac dollars. Back side is smooth.

On Sunday, I got up early and drove to the next town south. Hit two wood chip areas and found the two crosses, the little feet pin, the broken earring and more clad. All in all a fun weekend, plus I got a whole bunch of wheats to sort through in the evenings!

Hope you all enjoy the pics.

Nice finds Playah!I don't know what that penny is exactly but my best guess' have already been mentioned here. My first thought was that it was a plated penny with a bezel around it to be hung on a chain. Is there any evidence of a broken off loop?I also like bukle boys idea about a mint bag tag struck on a nickle or steel planchet. If it were a nickle planchet it would difinitly be too large for a penny die so the edges would need to be folded over to make it penny size, either way nice finds! Ground's covered with a couple inces of snow again here so it's back to jones'n for me.Bootstrap

Sorry about the snow, Bootstrap. And after a nice batch of silver, too.

Sounds like a good time to start checking out your basement. If folks on this forum knew you lived in a 1700's home with a dirt floored basement AND HAVEN'T DETECTED IT YET, they'd probably think you were crazy.

Good thing no one has told them, huh?

Very well done! I especially like the penny - reminds me of that hollow spy coin a while back. The jewelry is nice also.....

Good Luck on your return trip / NS

Now that I look at it again it looks like a bezel from a necklace and the coin is pushed into it to hold it in place. Trying holding the outter ring and use your thumbs to push out the coin

I don't know but I can see a gap between the band and the coin on both sides.

Hey 3searchin, thats it! Sooooo, does yours look like its two piece?

Lcutler, thanks for the help. I must say that this is NOT a coin....what looks like a band around the outside edge appears to be one half of the "coin" folded over....I think that the spot where the "band" looks broken is due to someone trying to pry the thing apart (probably to take out the spy chip.....I'm not being paranoid!).

MP Yes mine looks like it's two pieces too. and It also looks like someone tried to pry it apart at one point or another. Yours is a 56 D and the one I have is just a 56....interesting. It also seems to weight more than a regular wheat.

I Don't know for sure about MP's but the one I have doesn't have a band around the outside. It has a very large edge around the Lincoln side and there are no marks for a loop from necklace or anything. the only separation points are on the wheat side around the edge. It could be jewelery but I cant see where it was fastened to anything. I do remember fighting the urge to take it apart......but it passed I'll keep it like it is......Spy coin....Jewelry....or Magic I think I'll hold on to it. (if it's a spy coin at least they know where it's at because it does move...lol

3searchin,

You described it EXACTLY!! Mine even has a spot where it looks like someone tried to pry it apart. The rim is really heavy on the Lincoln side, which is why when I first saw this thing I thought I had a really unusually error coin.

Maybe we'll both get lucky and PBK will stop by this thread to share his wisdom...I have a feeling he's got a book stashed away somewhere that details what our mystery objects are.

In the meantime, have your "coin" handy at 9pm EST today. I'll talk really loud into mine and we'll see if you can hear me!

Just thought of something, years ago in the back of comic books I recall seeing a coin that could squirt water. Try squeezing it a little.
