looks like debitage or flakes from lithic reduction ( the making of arrowheads and tools) . Look around that area real good.

Wow it is amazing how much of this kind of stuff is laying around. Is it common to see so much? How hard should it be to find the good stuff?

One rarely finds complete points at lithic reduction sites. They banged out preforms and took them elsewhere to finish them. I've seen sites like that in Harrison Co. IN. So many flakes/spalls/chunks in a field you couldn't count them. Gary

Any idea why this is? Were the preforms taken to "experts" to refine?

Gary,

It's funny how that works. The best quarry sites are often frustrating places to hunt.

It very well could be the same site you are talking about, but I know a small field in Harrison County a couple of miles from Swan's Landing that really only knappers used to bother hunting. In decades of collecting I don't know of a single complete/finished nice relic found. But if you wanted buckets of broken crib mound style bifaces, flakes or raw material it was great. We used to hit if there were too many people digging at Swan's Landing.

Many, but not all, quarry areas were used by competing groups. It was best to get in there, get your rock, and get out. The preforms were taken away and could have been finished by the quarrier or traded for other items. Gary
