The bomb lance fragment, left, patented in 1879, was removed from the neck of a bowhead whale.
A 50-ton whale caught off the Alaskan coast was found to have an antique weapon embedded in its neck, evidence that it survived a similar hunt more than a century ago.
The bowhead whale, captured last month, had been swimming around with a three and a half inch long arrow-shaped fragment embedded deep in its blubber estimated to be between 115 and 130 years old.
The find gives researchers rare insight into the precise age of the whale, a fact usually approximated by examining amino acids in the eye lenses. Although it is rare to find a whale over a century, experts say the oldest were close to 200 years old.
