I believe a little cleaning might shed some light.perhaps warm water and dish soap.also a pic of backside helps us.yyour pic is good...but as a general rule a coin next to it gives us better size.welcome to tnet !!!!!we will get to the bottom of this mystery....just help us out a bit....:thumbsup:

Thats an idea that never came up in the long thread identification process posted above by kuger but we think the correct ID is horse tack strap adjuster. It would look like this complete. The old tent rope tighteners were different.

....and not to mention,not many tents were held up by string....these are pretty small

Our views sure are shaded by our experiences. When I saw the pic I thought side plate to a chain. ;-)
