Curious about this small stone tablet I found while hunting points in Napa, CA.

There seems to be a faint trace of red pigment on one side but it's only visible in certain light.

Maybe a un-drilled pendant or perhaps a game piece?

Nice obsidian pieces

I believe that’s an undrilled pendant. Very nice.

Nice bifaces. Very early pattern, right?
That flat rock, has one side that looks like
regular abrasions or cuts, but hard to say if it is man-made...

I was up late last night but I see what appears to be a slight trace of design on the red side ? Nice finds keep up the saves .

If the ochre (?) traces are on the abraded face, likely a tool (stone file) to make red paint.

Similar stones have been found in pots in northern Ohio and the pros consider them cooking stones. I have a couple larger ones I found plowed out of a cache of material that also appear to be stained, one red and one yellow, and I think they may be palettes for mixing body paint, but just a guess. the edges were shaped and ground smooth, but the faces are left naturally rough. Both are less than 1/4" thick. The scale is CM.

Like you said, "slight trace".

Do you see something like this? Or is it just my eyes.

Sorry to be so slow responding. Internet was down last few days....

I see what you see. Others see it too. I posted this at arrowheads.com and SGTDigger came up with a very similar sketch to yours.

So I did some research in Heizer's 'Archaeology of Napa Region' and found the following info on painted stone tablets.

This is what I've found.

It's a great find - being rare and unique to the area - and I'm very pleased.

Thanks for taking the time and lending you eagle eye to the case.

This is very cool. Thanks for showing me.

$19 seems worth it to decipher the paint.

I'll post results....

Id love to see the results also really cool find.

Just found out it's only available for ipad and iphone. Shame.

You need to view it under different lighting conditions, like different colored light, it should bring out the markings in greater detail

Original picture edited... I did not add anything to it the lines just show up better when the picture is edited using darkness, shadows, highlighting settings

This is awesome. Thank you so much. I figured somebody with Photoshop, and the chops, could do enough manipulation to bring out the design.

Looks like you nailed it.

It's a little different to designs in Heizer but conforms in every other way.

It's really interesting to see.

Maybe there were other colors originally but this pattern looks kind of complete.

Now we can all guess it's function....

BTW, I hope it ok for me to post your pic on arrowheads.com. I know they would be interested.
