Curious about this small stone tablet I found while hunting points in Napa, CA.

There seems to be a faint trace of red pigment on one side but it's only visible in certain light.

Maybe a un-drilled pendant or perhaps a game piece?

You should check out that site. Good community with lots of knowledge. Overlaps with here a bit, I reckon.

Read what I posted from Heizer. I think it nails what I've found.

Complete painted stone tablet which seems to be unique to Napa region and quite rare.

Can you get it under a scope somehow?

that might reveal a lot.

I've examined it with a loop but it doesn't reveal much more.

Like bad audio doesn't get better by turning up the volume.

I think arrow86's efforts are as good as we'll get. I don't think there's much else to see. Maybe a black light might show something...otherwise that's it.

My main concern is to protect it from fading more, so it's in a box and won't get in the display.

Great links, thanks.

The flat piece looks like Blueschist maybe. Might be referred to as California Slate sometimes, but the schists were used for a lot of things including pendants and the material isn’t always blue. It can be greyish to almost black. If it’s found at a site where it’s not occurring naturally then, obviously it was brought there by the Wappo or Coast Miwok as the case may be. The translucent obsidian point/blade is very fine and I really like the odd shaped point one that just seems to be missing the base or it’s a flat base by design. The glossy black one also very cool, maybe one of those fatter cascade’s.
