🔎 UNIDENTIFIED What did I find?

I was arrow head hunting last weekend and found this nodule. I cut it in half and polished it. Not sure what it is. The photos show it cut in half but not polished. Thanks for any help

I would call it a type of chalcedony. Its a pretty one.

What state was it found in? If it was found in the green areas of this map, I’d bet it is banded chert.

I’ve never heard of nodular chert from AR. I’d like to know exactly what it is and where it outcrops. Interesting!🤔

I found it near Eureka Springs Ar. It was on a back road in a seasonal creek bed wash out. A large field of low land that floods and washes out. I did not find any points but lots of debitage. If this rock was not chipped on one side to show the lemon colored inside I would not have picked it up. It really polished out nice.

It looks like you might have Boone chert. You’re right in the area it outcrops. Most of the Boone I saw was mottled, not banded. It may or may not be related but would be a good guess.

This is the only sample I could find with bands.

I now like what toddspoint has suggested as being chert. It be nice if everyone posting rocks would always mention the location they find them.

After looking at your sample, I realized it looks quite a bit like Utica chert from N Central IL in LaSalle County. Yellow, grey and whitish bands. This just goes to show how two totally unrelated rocks can look alike. Even to the trained eye. Only chemical analysis can determine the truth when it comes down to splitting hairs.

The polish shows the yellow better. You’re in a good area for chert. Just north of you in MO you can find Reeds Spring, Burlington and Pierson. I only did the tourist thing at eureka springs but hunted a lot of rock in SW MO.
