what did I do wrong?

Just received my T2 yesterday and couldn't wait to go out and try it today. I'll have to admit I was a little disappointed, but I think the main problem was user error rather than the machine.
Please tell me where I went wrong! When I arrived at the site, I turned the machine on and manually ground cancelled. The soil was really good and cancelled out in the sixties to the best of my recollection. I then proceeded to program each of the controls. I was able to ramp up both sensitivities all the way without any chattering. I set the disc. level at 10 and the number of tones at 2+, the hum level at +1.
The machine seemed to work o.k. on these settings, but a good target sounded much like an MXT in coin mode, which I never really cared for. So I then tried the tones on three, which was more like my MXT in relic mode--grunt for iron, medium to high pitch for others. The machine seemed to have a hard time locking on to a target in this mode though, often giving a high pitched signal, and then losing it on the return sweep. Tone set at 4 was just too many different sounds for me, and the "one" setting wasn't enough.
I found very little today, but I like the "feel" of the machine, and once I learn how to operate it properly, I think it'll be great.
Someone PLEASE tell me where I went wrong with the tuning, though. You won't hurt my feelings--I need to learn this the proper way! Thanks.

Ii would start with sense was probably too high and falsing would be the high pitch in one direction. I hunt old ghostown type places mostly and in the thickest nails have to use 2+ and less irony places use 3 and 4 is too much for me also. I the the t2 is very hot even with sense at 70 and probably easier to start with.

As dirtscratcher stated, try turning the sensitivity down. Your ID numbers should stabilize. I recommend running it below 70 while you are learning the machine.

These guys are right! Don't be afraid to leave it on factory sens for a bit. Trust me it's still very deep and should be stable and lock on the numbers better. It takes a little while to really get comfortable with it. You will though and you'll be happy

Thanks all you guys! I tried your recommended settings with much better success--could hear targets much more clearly! I found several old brass pieces, an 1897 silver dime, and an 1877-1913 Pope Motorcycle token in an area I had hunted many, many times. These items were in an area heavily laden with iron, so I turned the discriminate up to cancel out the iron, and still was able to get decent readings on these pieces. I still need to do some "tweaking" though, as I learn the machine. Several times I got a fairly good signal, but could find nothing! I think they may have been very tiny bits of metal that my pinpointer couldn't locate. (Or that I didn't have the time or patience to keep searching for!)
I look forward to going back some more. This has been a very productive C.W. site. Among my finds the most notable ones have been a Civil War sword guard, artillery button, Virginia button, sword hanger, clipped corner belt plate, carbine sling buckle, half a confederate horse bit, horseshoes, a George Washington medallion, bullets, toe plates, and numerous other nondescript pieces.

Every machine has its quirks and once we learn them our success increases. While we want as much depth as possible most of the time, I've found that most detectors perform better if the sensitivity is below maxed out and this is a good range to begin with.

That sounds like a pretty good day my friend! Being able to have success at old sites is exciting. Just an observation that I've made but it seems that when the disc is turned up to 50 it gets a boost in sens. I know that sounds strange but I can actually hear what sounds like the a bit of the internal circuitry noise like you would if you had the sens on. 99. I thought I was crazy but another T2 SE user brought it up without me mentioning it. I have cranked my disc up to 50 quite a few times in heavy iron. ESP after I noticed this sens gain. Glad you had some success so early on. It will just get better and better!

I think you're right on with this one and thanks for your post!

There's another one to try! I can't wait--I was on about 40 sens. but I'm going to try 50 next time! Thanks so much for all your posts--your advice has been extremely helpful!

Listen closely when you hit 50 with disc. Esp with headphones on. You can hear it. And please tell me if I've completely lost my mind. My gf already thinks so :-)
