I think it has both, one on each side, altough the SOLIDE is hard to read.

(or maybe something about a parachute invasion, can't be too sure :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:)

PS. sorry if that brings up bad memories BCH :hello:

I see what looks like the word CIE which I believe is French for Company or something similar.

:read2:

These Buckles were generally used on unseen garments, such as corsets and waiste coates. They date to the late 19th and early 20th century....Solide the swiveling protector, was patended in 1888. :icon_thumleft:

Sounds about right. A buckle similar is believed to have been used by Zouave units in the CW but that would bring up a debate Im sure. http://www.worldcat.org/title/zouave-civil-war-red-wool-trousers/oclc/61735801?tab=details
Wilkinson made a Utilltarian Buckle very similar with various chapes, the design was regestered in 1885, I know that is at the end of the war, but perhaps they were in use before they were regestered :dontknow:...Didn't Wilkinson also make some of the Blades for CW Swords.

Think it would be alright to drop it in peroxide for a bit? It may clear up the date

However I don't want to do it if it might damage the "hinged part"

You could always watch, and stop the process, should you feel it's damaging the Buckle :P

I see the date. Cool. Some are dated 1865 but it looks as if yours may be 1880.

Alright maybe I'll give it a go. I've used it on coppers with great success but have not tried it on any relics yet.

I would have to look for a picture. I would imagine they were made by many different companies. SOLIDE simply means SOLID in French.. I think we found this type from 1865 up until the 1950's. I dont know anything about the patent or design registered. 8)

It looks like the French company name is D ? CIE I cant see the mark in the middle.

This style of buckle certainly dates back at least as far as the American Civil War. I have one of the same style with an 1850's patent date on it.

Best Wishes,

Buckles
