What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you? (solved)

For example, if you were to tell me that you took up a hobby of book reading and often visit a book club to talk about the book. AND, I said, "If that gets your goat, go for it".

It that derogatory? My brother just spent probably the last half hour writing me a full page email on why I need to be less critical of him and be more supportive with pro-active comments. I just didn't understand... Did I miss something?

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

Well I believe that "If that gets your goat" just means it upsets you... I think you are using it wrong :tongue3:

Here's an example: You know what really gets my goat? Having my post removed by some crybaby :laughing9:

Yep.

Actually you should have said

"if that Floats your Boat"

Here's an example: You know what really gets my goat? Having my post removed by some crybaby :laughing9:

you need to be less critical and be more supportive :laughing9:

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

:laughing9: Naaahhhh... :laughing9: I'm good to go, as is :tongue3:

Then again, after thinking.....

It might be even more fun to use any saying out of context and watch people :icon_scratch: :laughing9:

I think I'll try that on a few replies and see what happens :tongue3:

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

actually the old saying is kinda used wrong in that. getting your goat means it upsets you.

why would someone say if it upsets you, go for it???? kinda weird to place that saying in that context.

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

Yup, you're using the term wrongly Mike...although it's pretty obvious what you were meaning. The usual term would be "whatever floats ya boat / turns you on".
Neither those nor yours can be taken as "criticism", they mean "well that's your thing, it isn't mine", but then we know your brother's a bit of an oddball from other posts! lol.

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

You could construct a hybrid statement - "Well, whatever floats your goat." That'll keep him pondering for a few.

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

"If that gets your goat"

Yup, I've always used that the same as:

"If that bothers you...."
or
"If that angers/annoys you...."

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

I think it's time for that little solved check mark thingy :tongue3:

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

to gets one goat --means to upset or piss off another person (as in if a thief took your goat , you'ld be upset --as goats in the middle east are used to provide baby milk for children , milk to make cheese from for adults and also for producing young goats to eat and the older non productibe ones are also ate as food --as such their quite important and valuible --to "lose" one real ticks the owner off. --ie --its "gets" his goat

now if you meant if you like it , do it -- a more fitting phraze would have been --( IF THAT FLOATS YER BOAT , GO FOR IT) which is a bland rather luke warm way of saying -- if your interested in it you do it --- which basically means its not your cup of tea ( your not interested in it) but if they like it so be it. --

a more polite way of saying the same basic thing is---------- its great to see that you like ---y---(playing bridge), as for me , I'm more into ---z---(playing chess) myself (that way you tell them you now know they like Y , while at the same time telling them your interests lay elsewhere (z)

Re: What does "If that gets your goat" mean to you?

OMG. To get one's goat. They used to keep goats in the stall with race horses, as they calmed them down before the race. So to steal the goat would upset the horse, and it might do worse in the race. (Y'all need to read Uncle John's Bathroom Reader for more or less accurate info) Mike, if you told me you wanted to take up sky-divin off that tower in Austin, I would say, well, whatever floats your boat. A lot of the old sayings are being corrupted and changed around so that they make no sense, as if they did in the first place unless you were in the know. 'Losin my religion'. Little controversy when REM came out with that. Not for me, cause I knew exactly what it meant, bein from the south. 'Young man, you don't get in there and clean that room up, I'm fixin to lose my religion!'. Nothin at all to do with church.

Being from Down Souf'... "That get your goat?" Down heah it literally means you have antognized me, pizzed me off, it's being "rubbed" in my face, and I'm ready to fight. I DON'T know what it may mean in other parts of the country. But if I'm addressed with "That get your goat?"... an azzwhupping for sure, me or the other... fight for sure.
