Wow! Never seen anything like that. Are there any mounting holes in it. The first thing that comes to mind is part of a flag staff..

I was thinking along the lines of a flag staff as well. It's very clear that it's an eagle and a star above it. I'm certain one of the CW experts here will know exactly what it is!!!

I was thinking along the same lines and yes there is a hole in the bottom of it. I would just like to know for sure.

It appears to be a plume holder. Lance (ComfyinVermont) found one of these a while back, as shown in the lower photo. Similar "eagle & star with rays" designs were used on various U.S. military headgear from the 1830's through the late 1800's. The helmet in the photo below is the Model 1881.

When I first saw it at a glance...........
I could have sworn it was a "flaming grenade" which designated an artillery regiment?.
You guys will solve it...........it sure is a nice find.
I will stick with cobs......lol
PBK....looks like you nailed it with the 2nd plume pic. YOU ROCK.

A properly set up web search list will do wonders. Anyone can do it. it just takes a little time. Enter in the right discriptive words and like a blood hound follow the scent. Setting up your list is the challenge. PBK has put a lot of time and energy into his and it pays off.

Thanks! However, in this case having copies of United States Army Headgear to 1854 and American Military Headgear Insignia within easy reach helped make the chase a short one.

And yes, you're right: "Anyone can do it." — and everybody should! :)

Do not sell PBK short, or his means of research. He's been here longer then most of us, and I've seen him ID things to perfection over and over. He is good!

kenb

p.s. I would say he nailed this one as well.
