My initial thought was that it could be a faster for some type of garment, but I'm really not sure. I found a thimble a few inches from it, and most of the other items recovered from this site are civil war era.

Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I would venture to say that it is a sash/belt buckle. Looks like a tongue & wreath variety.
