Another vote for Garrett ProPointer.

On a budget / no found gold yet / just getting started: mess around with the Harbor Freight one

I will jump in here and say stay away from the Garrett Pro Pointer. Type "Garrett Pro Pointed Problem" into google and really do some reading. Everyone I know who has had one has had to send it back for repairs, some of them needing several trips back to the factory. When they came out, they were a hot item, pretty much the best out there. Now, there are a lot of options that will serve you better.

I use the Pistol Probe, while it is a little large, it has outlasted a few buddies Garretts.

Check out Minelab ProFind, Whites TRX, Makro Pointer, to name a few.

After many years of detecting and numerous pin pointers I highly recommend the Sun Ray products. I have an XL1 on my White's XLT and a DFX on my White's VX3 and would not use anything else. They are made for most brands of detectors and will out perform any point pointer I have been associated with.
