Detector(s) used
Tesoro Vaquero, Tesoro Silver uMax
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
For some wild reason (I guess all my cool finds. :) ) my mother is interested in getting a detector and hunting some less wild areas like school yards and stuff.

She wants something light weight and needs a decent detector.

Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?tesoro all the way i've been detecting for about 15 years and tried many brands but i always end up going back to tesoro!and after all these years i still use my compadre more than anything else!

hard to go wrong with the delta 4000 -- very light weight 2.3 lbs -- price is right $279 + tax at kellyco * -- uses 1 --9 volt -- its has a large easy to read 0 -99 numbers type display --with 99 "slots / numbers" -- so it sorts things out better than the 8 notch Ace 250 display can (dig less junk that way )-- while the ace 250 is highly popular and justly so -- heck I had one before my delta 4000 (still do as a back up / loaner)--the delta is a better machine in my veiw --plus its very easy to use and understand

You're already using a Silver uMax and you have to ask about light detectors?

One more vote for the Tesoro Compadre.

Inexpensive, lifetime guarantee, simple to use, great for mothers.

I'm Shocked that noone mentioned using the swingy thingy."Bungie Cord"

It takes just about all of the weight of the detector off of your arm.. kellyco also sells a bungy cord aswell for a lower cost.
IMO The swingie thingie is a waste of money. Don't freak out . Just my opinion. When I started my wife bought one as a gift. Skeptical, I tried it out. I didn't like it. It's very simple to make your own for half the money. Ace hardware sells the bungee material in bulk. and the clips are primitive. If you must have one!~The less junk to be carried in the field the better. Mine is currently clipped to my water cooler on my truck.

Listen to Dan

my vote also on the tesoro.

they pioneered the switch to lightweight back in 1996

with the umax [micromax] series. i have the silver and its very light

and ez to use.

if price is an object. then the compadre.

any of the umax series are good. an older 90s model should still be

a great machine for a noob. prob except the eldorado umax.

bargain basement would be a bounty hunter.

they are light

The lightest Detector is a Tesoro Compadre with the 5.75 coil.

Tesoro Compadre 2.2 lbs awesome machine for a beginner turn on an hunt no adjustments to figure out no ID to try an figure out , turn it on it beeps you dig it up .Plus its a fast recover machine, just like your Tesoro......(unlike the ace 250)

Get her a Compadre an a long handle scoop an turn her loose in the tot lots ,plus she can be the cool grandma with the beepin stick to all the kids lol.

Plus their allways on EBay brand New for $151.20 Free shipping. You just cant beat the price an the warranty .

The Garrett ACE 250 is a light easy good work horse.

I'd Suggest a X-Terra 30,50 or 70. So she could do more hunting as she grows with the MD.
The X-Terras have the ability to change frequency with the coil. Thats what I mean.

I run an Xterra 705 lightweight but has a learning curve. Not to bad though. My bounty hunter is a little lighter. don't like it nearly as well.

Good luck
Jeff

I've always though the XLT felt the lightest, it wasnt technically the lightest but the way it was balanced I could swing it for hours. On the other hand the Minelabs I've used had horrible balance and seemed bottom heavy, Fisher CZ's were fairly heavy also but better balanced than the Minelabs. When trying to find a lightweight one dont just go by the numbers, a heavy machine thats better balanced will feel lighter than a light machine with a bad balance to it.

Tesoro Silver uMax is a great machine and is light. I bought the Minelab X-70 to have a very light machine that has more features. Very pleased with both.
