what is this black sand please

heard loads about it being gold rich why?
what does it look like coal dust?
where is it on the beach

Black sand is ground up minerals- usually magnetite and hematite which have a heavier specific gravity than most of the surrounding minerals. They will usually sink deeper when deposits are formed. So on a beach, when the waves come in during storms and strip away all the lighter stuff, you will see streaks or patches of black sand.

Gold is also heavy and will deposit with the black sands. Not all black sands carry gold, however. Both are heavier than most of the surrounding rocks, and when crushed up to granules will sometimes deposit together.

SO..... to sum up..... if you are in gold country, look for the black sand deposits and you may get lucky and find some gold.

If you are not in gold country, black sands will most likely be just that, black sands. Never hurts to check though- never know
