remember that item also. Looked just like the one above, but in better shape I believe. I don't think it was ever I.D.'d.

Re: what is this

I have seen something similar to this before.
A cord string or small rope was inserted in the round end
and the hinged jaws were closed making a metal end or keeper
to stop it from pulling back through a small opening.
Just a wild guess.

Lead safe? Pencil leads inside and a rubber eraser in the cylinder end.

Re: what is this

I don't know why, but for some reason, my first thought was some type of pencil sharpener. However, now I don't think so.

Thanks Mojjax. Here are the pics. Does yours have any writing Taz? Its apparently made in Germany. If somebody knows how to do a German patent search of D.R.P.(Deutsches Reichspatent) no. 50863 and we will have it. :icon_study: Im a little tired at the moment. :D

Re: what is this

The DRP, or Deutsches Reichspatent, was a "proper" patent, assigned from 1877 until 1945.

Re: what is this

I found this little excerpt on a page I was looking at... [9]Deutsches Reichspatent 99667, entitled “Schallweiser mit zwei akustischen Empfängern,” was granted on 18 October 1898 to David P. Heap.. So if DRP 99667 is from 1898, then 50863 is earlier than that, unless there is another number that couldn't be read. :icon_scratch:

Here's another... The latest method, covered by Deutsche Reichs Patent No. 730853 dated 28 January 1943 for the "cleaning of mixtures of tar oils and aliphatic hydrocarbons" consists of a treatment by sulfur dioxide SO2, in gas form, at atmospheric pressure.

So this thing, if DRP is meaning Deutsches Reichspatent on this piece, I'd say it is definately pre-1898.

^ DRP's patent No. 37435 (PDF, 561 kB, German) was filed January 29, 1886 and granted November 2, 1886, thus taking effect January 29.

Narrowing down the date more, 1886-1898.

Re: what is this

I think it may be a chalk holder for when the pieces got small.
Is there some kind of spring action, would it clamp something in the hole? ???

Re: what is this

Thanks for help every body.

No Bigc I cant see any marks on this one. I have tried to find that drp No. but no luck yet.

P.B , I think its too small for chualk, the hole is 1/4" Dia. The parts that swing out have small springs on the pins they pivot on but are to far gone to tell witch way it sprag , open or shut.

Cheyenne yes I think patent is pretty old, school desk frames I found there ( think I dug about a half a ton of) are patent 1881.

Here is another pic. The way its made I think the small side swings to 90 degrees and was used in that position. and the other side is just a cover for when its closed. small ink stamp? with stamp part rotted away and knob missing from top.

Could the other side hold the ink pad?

I've ran into dead ends searching for DRP patents. The closest I have got is this... Be it known that I, Bruno Beyer, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Grossen- hain, Saxony, German Empire, have invented 5 a certain new and useful process of treatment of waste raw silk or "burr" with a view to its employment for the manufacture of underclothing or the like, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Germany, D. R. P., No. io 57,059, dated June 14,1890, and in Great Brit/ ain, No. 12,817, dated July 28, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.

So that narrows it down to a 1886-1890 time frame. (Ref. my posts above)

Maybe somebody across the pond has access to searching German patents? :icon_scratch:

If it had a stamp in it I dont think there would be any room left for ink pad. I have tried you patent links but cant get them to take a DRP No. , think they only take newer CE No.
