Two weird "what's it" from today

I will try to explain these pieces, but I have no idea what they are. I took pics from 2 angles, but would take more if someone thought it would help in the id.
1) Copper object with two glass pieces inside- It is about 4" long. Has a ring hole on end for suspension. It has a gear in the top part where two oval pieces of glass were in a copper mount. I am guessing they swung out from the center. I broke one of them while fiddling with it. I stopped my "cleaning" at that point. My only idea is some kind of old reading glasses? I would to know if anyone has seen or found a similar object.
2) Sterling Silver adornment- I thought it was broken when I found it, but it is complete. It has a 2 slots on the back that come together in a point. It is some kind of decorative piece, but I can't figure out what it was used for. My only guess was something to put on the bottom of tie for an extra "look". Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Two weird "what's it" from today

One mystery solved.
The glasses are called a "Lorgnette". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorgnette . When masonlid posted a monocle I did a wikipedia and saw a reference to a lorgnette. Clicked it, and the answer appeared. Interesting thing is that they have a picture of one from William Howard Taft. I found my pair within a mile of William Howard Taft's house. Weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now the important question, has anyone else ever found a pair of them? Anyone want to restore the pair I found?

Jon.

Decorative book end. Way to nail it guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully, I can find the other 3 corners. Interesting that it is marked sterling and has a hallmark on it for something so insignificant.

I'm afraid I ruined the lorgnette. I may try to take it apart, and see if I can lay it out how it looked. Seriously, what do you guys with all the "stuff". Feel like I should throw it away, but then again....

I dont get to find anything that good. Keep the silver its from a very fancy book. Can you post the hallmark? book PrayerBook18thCentVanNoordwijkColl.jpg
Maybe electolysis or WD-40 on the other? I dont know. :-\ Maybe you can drop the whole thing in transmission fluid for a few days to loosen it up.
