Out of curiosity what guns do you have to clean, and what is your best catfish bait?

One of the best jobs in law enforcement was when I hired on with the DA's officer as 'Special Investigator'. I wasn't really hired for my dope buying skils, but for my report writing skills. I can halfway put a prosecutable warrant or report together. Much better than 'car go fast I see not stop I chase red light siren. Broke law.' Most fun you can have, and can potentially kill people you don't even know. Did a deal one night, and the guy held the bag up and I grabbed it, but he held on, then I saw somethin shiny come up in his right hand, so I pulled the trigger on the gun on my right coat pocket, but nothin happened as it was still on safety, then I saw it was a knife, so I eased up, bought the dope, and went on. He later went to prison, but he's probably out and mayor of that town now.

I remember the video; you wore a mullet :headbang:

I like this quote from Robert Heinlein's character Lazarus Long, especially the last sentence.

A man should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

My first job hhmm ? it was delivering news papers 7 days a week on a bicycle 175 papers when i was 14 back in 1964 it was the Long Island Press news paper if anyone is familiar with the New York Times it was as big as that on Sundays huge !! i had 3 big wire baskets on the bike but i still had to make 4 trips back home to refill all the papers on average i would get a dollar tip each week thats about 175.00 but on Christmas people would give more up to 4.00 x 175 nice haul 700.00 when i was 14 was a lot of money :headbang: second job was a ball buster :laughing7: i learned how to build docks piers and boat slips with a big constitution company working in the bay all spring summer and fall , i learned how to use the crane on a barge and sink telephone poles in the water shoot a mud hole 10 feet deep with a water jet it was very physical work hot and dirty but you could go for a swim in the bay which was nice the boss was a retired General from the Army he was a nut case :laughing7: on pay day he would pay us cash which i might say was really good for 17 years old $$$ but he only payed us at the local gin mill and would line up shots on the bar and if you didnt drink them he would start yelling at you lmao crazy dude . I think that this an enjoyable thread but it begs the question what are the jobs that we hear that Americans won't do, will some one list them for me?

Instead of listing all of the jobs I've had, I'll list this specific type.

The WORST job is a tie between 2:

--busboy at an Officers' Club on a military base I was stationed at when I was an Airman No-striper. (like slopping hogs)

--cleanup crew for the coliseum in OKC after a big Rock N' Roll extravaganza. I was working for a Temp Agency. (more slopped hogs)

With full apologies to hogs.

I know a guy in his elderly years that his only income is providing karaoke services to a local bar. I fix his gear from time to time for about $25 a pop. This usually means I spend many hours, sometimes days, figuring out what the problem is. He would normally pay a few hundred for this. But, 25 is a good price. He appreciates it.

in my youth to earn spending cash for better grade clothing for school and general fun money spending ( i got no allowance -- you did household chores and cut the yard and such because you "lived and ate here / so you gotta chip in --no free riders) -- i shoveled snow in the winter , cut grass in the summer -- metal can scrapped and soda pop bottle gathered any bottles for their "deposit" worth or any other grunt work a kid could find to do to earn cash ( my folks would buy the basic type El Cheapo bargin basement "boring" clothing -- if i wanted "cool" top quality name brand stuff-- i had to "pony up" the differance $$$-- as dad said --you wanna be "hip and cool" fine --you break your back to do it , cuz your not breaking mine for it , I'll feed you , house you and basic cloth you and take medical care of you --your needs will be taken care of --your "wants" however you gotta take care of , when folks want a lot --they gotta work a lot.-- you might as well learn that lesson that at a young age .--the "real" differance between I NEED and i WANT.

AS A ADULT only had 3 jobs

2 were part time jobs that I did between ships -- a manager at a thrift store and a worker at a plastic extruder plant -- both jobs stunk and lasted about 2 months

my real "profession" was UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE (as mess hand , then cook , then cheif steward / baker) where the 12 hour work day is the minimum (it can be more as needed) for 8 months a year ( normal on / off rotation was 4 straight months on 2 months off -- 2 times per year )--being you worked a 12 hour day the 4 months you were on shi p-- made up for the 2 months off -- hours worked wize -- you winded up working the equal to 8 hours a day / 7 days a week /365 days a year --after 30 years of that --- if you were at least 55 you could retire on early retirement at a reduced rate -- i went out on medical after 27 years --1980 - 2007 --- after basically working the equal to 27 years of 8 hours a day without a day off .

I lived the nice suburban life until i was around 8. My parents got a divorce and my life changed forever. My mother had serious problems, couldn't hold a job and so on. On Saturdays when i was with my Dad i had a normal life, fishing and hunting and even a Yamaha motorcycle. Thru the week with my mom i lived a life you can't even imagine on the poor side of the tracks. Well enough of all that.

Painted porches in Fincastle in Camp Taylor at around 9 & 10.

Lied about my age at 11 to get my workers permit to work at Audubon Country Club as a caddie.
I would wake somewhere around 4:30 or 5:00 and walk to the golf course so i could be the first
one out and maybe go again. I tell my daughter these stories and she just rolls her eyes.

After that i was a dish washer at Audubon.

Then at around 16 i got a job at Clark Service Station on Poplar level Rd and Hess Ln.
This was no doubt a dangerous job and the most dangerous time of my life.
Fast cars, lots of alcohol, and fighting off robbers and some customers and other
punks from rival neighborhoods and schools. There were fights here all the time.
This place was open 24hrs and it was almost my home for few years. It was the place
where everybody hung out.

Got a job selling vacuum cleaners at 700.00 a wack. Only sold one and it was to a
good buddie trying to help me out. This was around 74 or 5.

Got a job selling ink pens on the phone and was making more money than ever.
Went into work one morning and the office was bare and the FBI had some
questions for me. It was a boiler room operation. They figured out i was a
ig-no-rant kid just like all my co-workers.

Got another telephone solicitors job selling Policeman ball tickets.

Then by the grace of God i saw an ad in the local rag for a Mapper, no experience necessary. This changed my life forever. I cut it out and still have it somewhere i think. Well by this time i was suspicious of these type ads. I had already been thru a 68 Chevell and a 68 Roadrunner and was down on my luck and was driving a 60 Chevy that i paid 50.00 bucks for that my Grandpa used for driving around the farm in Glasgow, he left the windows down all the time and it had dirt dobber nest in it, they hatched and i got stung. Anyway, i drove to the place and parked way down the street so they couldn't see my car. This was a real fancy office park in St. Mathews called Executive Park. I went in and was real intimidated by what i saw and what i was told about the job. It involved taking a blank aerial and doing a complete as-built of the local power company's facilities. Any way i got the job and it worked out great, i got the experience to get the job i have now with the local Cable Co, 29 years now in the Engineering and Construction Dept. I often wonder what would have come of me if i hadn't seen that ad. I thank God for all my blessings.

Don't know if anybody else caught that. You're alright MikeofAustin.

I've never been unemployed since I was 13 years old except for a few days or weeks between jobs and that was my choice. Started out as a soda jerk in a dairy store at 13. Sacked groceriesand stocked shelves in a supermarket in high school and paid for my first car and gas to run it. 1950 Ford 2dr. Cpe with a '53 Merc flathead V-8., with two 2 barrel carbs on an Offenhauserm intake, dual exhaust, lake pipes and the old car was dehorned. Hottest thing in school in 1960. Even ate up the 283 Chevys. U.S. Air Force, Operations and Command Post Specialist. Valve grinder for an oilfield pump manufacturer while waiting on the Police Academy to start up. Police Department, Police Dispatcher, Officer, Corporal, Detective, (Vice and Narcotics), Uniform Sergeant, Jail Supervisor, Senior Investigator (detective sergeant), supervised Burglary, Larceny, Heavy Equipment Theft, White Collar Crimes, Sex Crimes, Homicide and Forensic Hypnosis for all crimes. I guess I did it all except traffic? Retired from PD in 1988 and went to work as the City Code Enforcement Manager (Nuisance and zoning enforcement) and Parking Enforcement Manager( Metered parking and restricted zones in downtown area), for 10 years and then retired for good. Now I have my most important job and that is to spoil my grandkids. Monty

McDonald's fry cook, worked in hotels banquit and housekeeping type stuff for almost 4 years ,wood working, construction for 2 years,Terminix for 4 years ,Deck hand in the Navy for 4 years and Vehicle Maintenance in the AF since 2002 . I also have bought and sold junk along the way but usually just break even if I am lucky . ;D
