Hey all,

I'm curious to know what your personal motivation is for finding treasure? I'm guessing when you keep hitting dead ends and finding nothing it will help to stay motivated. Why did you get started? And is this just something you do for fun, or is there some specific reason you do it?

Also, how do you stay encouraged when you don't find anything?

I do it for fun. I've always loved history and there is a lot here where I live. When I started I had a lot of success right off the batt and I think this is what keeps me motivated. It's hard to explain but it's like wanting to know what's over the next hill. I just have to see.

Sure beats watching TV !!!

I love history. love hearing about it and touching it.
I have a real passion for the civil war era. I cant learn or hear enough about it or the people that lived it.
Yesterday morning before daybreak i walked outside. the cold went straight through my heavy clothing.
The very first thing that came to mind was " How did they stand the cold" They could not run back inside
to a warm stove. they lived in the brutal conditions 24/7.
There was a lot of men that didn't even have shoes much less warm clothes.

So i guess it's a combination of wanting to know more and Respect for the men that formed this nation that keeps me digging.

I guess for me its just the thrill of the hunt... feeling my heart beat faster when i get a good signal, i guess i have a "addictive personality" Lol...

What motivates one to seek treasure ?

The Treasure. :P

The next plug may be "the plug" that holds a bucket lister. The next permission my be a virgin site that has not detected previously. Most of the mansions and public parks and schools have been hit hard over the past 50 years, so it is a challenge to find any old stuff at these sites. The hobby has been a great motivator to get to know the people of the area, do good deeds, and secure permissions. I have learned so much about the tri county area through research and taking the roads never travelled looking for prospective targets.

For me it's become a sickness. At times, every thought is framed around metal detecting. It's the thrill of the unknown, kind of like pulling the lever on a slot machine at a casino. I also love local history and the outdoors in general, it's great exercise and can also pay off if you spend ridiculous amounts of time doing it like I tend to do. The downside- home life responsibilities go out the window, priorities tend to get "confused", but it's all good either way.

Pretty much everything, I am not the type to follow an exercise plan because it's wasted energy on a repeditive motion. At least this way I can get exercise and in a sense get paid for it, even if it's just a few cents. The Mrs likes when I bring her free jewelry, I like researching the relics I find, and the conversation they start. Plus it's my only hobby that pays for itself.

Come on Keppy.... Your supposed to say "MONEY" I'm just picking Bud, hope I didn't offend you, couldn't help myself.

Years back I realized the amount of treasure out there.....try putting That Genie back in the bottle!

Plus it is a treasure hunt that is uniquely tailored to each individual treasure hunter on just about all levels, very personal but can be shared.

There is the wonder of the history of objects found, you learn a lot along the journey.

It's interesting fun, mostly in the great out doors. :sly:

Plus there's not too many hobbies that produce money, sometimes people even hand it to you! :D

Exercise, Fun, Joy of being outside in the fresh air and Money if I find anything someone else wants more than me.
I've never had a bucket /wish list because I'm not a coin collector. The right brain (Creative) says I need to upgrade my detector but the left brain ( math minded) says save the money for buying Silver. (Note:Wife thinks there is a vacuum up there.)

Money.

The thought of making MORE money!

It's the journey.

... and the fact that I've got to out-do all my loser friends.

And prove Crispin wrong.

Twice.

Folks,

I guess the thrill of the chase is what keeps me going....heck I've been on skunks doing like 12 hunts in a row with just a bit of clad and junk....and then bam I get a find like one of the rings in my avatar and that starts the cycle all over again.

Regards + HH

There is no wrong answer to the question.

Fun is what motivates me. Cause if it ain't fun, it ain't worth doing.

...my dog also enjoys the fringe benefits of detecting, when I take him for walks he tends to go side to side for some reason

The thrill of the unknown. Researching the history of the location, narrowing down an area, then you hit your first target. Part of the thrill is actually locating an artifact, coin or whatever, that fit's the era that your looking for. I agree with Bill. If you get in a dry spell, all it takes is that one target that starts the addiction all over again!
