This is a first for me...no coins found. ??? Pretty much destiny though...especially since we found out later that day that they put about 8 feet of fill dirt over the site a few years ago. ;D I knew something was screwy when I would get a nice plug dug...then find a piece of wood and all kinds of crap in the hole besides a coin. :icon_sunny:
Niterider_58 and I hit an old train depot site and we thought we were going to be zillionaires after my first dig...which turned out to be the ONLY keeper on the day. :dontknow: My first target was a nice coin hit...and it was deep. I dig down around 10" and the probe was still singing...but the target was bigger...so I figured big chunk of metal crap. :D Well I was half right. I popped out a big chunk of metal and cussed to myself as I rubbed some mud off where I could see a few words. Phil yelled over..."did you find something interesting"? I replied ya'...a big chunk of crap with some writing on it. :tongue3: I then gave it my best backhand frisbee toss of around 20 to 25 feet or so where it promptly landed perfectly at the base of Phil's explorer xs. I watched as he picked it up and started rubbing to see what the words were. His face turned bright red and his eyes opened up like he downed a can of hot sauce. :icon_biggrin: He then shouted out a few choice bad words and ended with..."you lucky S. O. ?"
I guess these are quite valuable to collectors...but to me...it's a big chunk of crap with words on it. ;D
It is a baggage tag from the old B&O Railway system...and it's pretty big and heavy...about the size of a western belt buckle. Phil said it was probably from around the 1920's or so...and thought it should be worth anywhere from $50 to as high as $150 if I decided to sell it at auction because it's in great shape and completely intact....yippee!

Bryce,
Are you kidding me? That is an awesome find!!! Better than an old coin for sure.

Thanks MM. I almost just stuck it in my "junk" pouch...but I was rubbing the mud off to try and see what it was...when my buddy yelled at me. He saw me struggling with it....my eyes are getting bad ;D. That's when I just chucked it at him thinking it was only a big junk piece with some letters on it. Boy was I wrong

Man, I know what you mean. My eyes are getting bad too. The other day I thought I saw the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, but then I realized I was standing naked in front of the bathroom mirror. :o ;D

Thanks Nick. I wish there wasn't 8 stinkin' feet of fill dirt there. After Phil saw my find...he got very excited...and then I was excited because I found my first true relic...and then......well...nothin' but fill dirt ;D

you find anymore "hunks of iron with lettering" you going to throw away let me know ok?

Hi Bryce!!

Sorry to hear that site you guys tried out had fill dirt. I hate when that happens....after digging zincolns at 8", I'm outta there.

I think I would have found that tag to be a piece of junk too....might have thrown it out. That's a cool find once you know what you've got.

Hope you find some oldies next time out, my friend!!
