Horse harness, mule harness, and anything made out of leather in the old days too thick to be sewn together. Thats my theory! They sure sound good especially the bigger ones, makes you think "Coin!" Aww shucks another of those things!

As DCMatt and CoinandRelicMan indicated, that form of brass rivet has been used for centuries, to connect two pieces of leather, especially on horse-&-mule-harnesses and other leather equipment. Far more of them were used on civilian-usage leather items than military ones. Unfortunately, there is no way to date them with much accurately.
