Detector(s) used
Tesoro Tejon, Tesoro Vaquero, Eric Foster PI, White's gold detector
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
an excellent choice..A bit of a learning curve but i'm sure he can get help from the forum if he needs it

I would suggest something simplier like the Silver Umax. It has one tone and a preset GB that is a deep easy to use detector. Ones he dries behind the ears he can decide if he wants to work to have fun.

the silver is a excellent machine its kind of a sleeper, and the 12 x 10 coil worked really good on this as well for me anyways, you'l be surprised what you will find!

I would have to go with sandman & vaquero44 on the silver to start out with.... Turn on and hunt best way to start.

Cibola for a first machine. :headbang:

Boy, never thought you'd get so much conflicting advice, did ya?? :laughing7: :laughing7:

I'm going to recommend the Compadre. You can check my earlier posts and see why.

The uMax is great and offers interchangeable coils, but the Compadre runs at a higher frequency (12 kHz to the uMax's 10 kHz) which means it'll be more sensitive to gold jewelry.

The Compadre is also very simply to use, has the kind of depth where you'll find 90% of your targets (6" or less), and only requires an outlay of $150.00 brand new.

On top of that, it has a smaller 5" coil which is excellent for those trashy parks and schoolyards.

And lets not forget how much fun the Compadre is, which is what this hobby is all about anyway.

If your friend ever decides to upgrade, the Compadre will continue to serve as a backup/loaner detector.

Good luck on your choice. :icon_thumleft:

I have the Golden, the tones are what separates it from Tesoros other detectors, they all should have tones. Easy to learn like the Silver and you get the benefit of tone ID. Would be an excellent detector to start with and most likely he will never get rid of it. And flip the Notch switch to eliminate most pulltabs while still getting ladies gold rings. Now, you can't beat that.

I would not recommend a Tessoro as a first detector

He is going to dig about 20 bottle caps and then look at you and say, why the h%^& did you tell me to get this thing? Yeah digging by tone is the way to go but there is so much darn trash now you need a digit display.

If you want a Tessoro I know about 3-4 people in our club selling them after being outhunted consistantly by the Minelabs, Fishers and the Whites owners.

If someone is afraid to dig junk, they'd better find a new hobby. Sorry, just my opinion.

Screens are just another excuse not to dig. That screen will also lie to you about what is really down there about 40%-60% of the time. So you might be passing up junk, but you might also be passing up really good finds.

Talk to those Minelab and Fisher owners with the screens. The experienced ones will likely tell you they don't rely on the screen at all, but go with the tones only. They didn't buy the detector for the screen. They bought it for the technology to go deeper, etc.

Some people may run away from Tesoro because they genuinely don't like them, but I suspect some do it because they don't want to take the time to learn their detector. That's a pity because they're throwing away a really good detector that can meet or beat many machines costing twice as much.

But to each their own.

Don't get me wrong. I think Tessoros are great for relic hunting and some other types of detecting but for newbies...Yep, but they get disappointed if their Good find to trash ratio is not very high.

I see it in the eyes of every newbie Tessoro owner that hunts with me. By noon I am holding a handful of coins and some of them silvers and they got 90 bottlecaps and pulltabs.

I'm a newbie, I've only been detecting for only a year now but I am pretty convinced I can do circles around any Tessoro when coin shooting.

I'll be in Florida this Christmas if you want we can meet up and I can prove it to ya.

Care to make a wager? :tongue3:

I say get the Cibola. That was my first machine and was a great introduction to metal detecting. I have found tons of goodies in different environments with and I continue to do so. I have a nice Minelab, but most of the time I find myself going for the Cibola. Simple machine and very effective.

Oh how I wish I could meet up with you in Florida to prove you wrong.

I would too. I really would. I've heard that experts can out detect any VID machine. I just haven't seen it happen yet.

I think on my next hunt I will see if my buddy wants to swap detectors to see if he then kicks my butt.

The Golden uMax ... would make a good choice because of the four tones.

And In My Humble Opinion there is no beginners detector!
Everyone will go thru a learning curve no matter what detector they buy.
Metal detecting is like no other hobby you can do ... it puts money back into your pocket.
Your detector is an investment that WILL pay for itself over time.
If you are unsure this hobby is for you then buy a good used one from someone well known on the forums.
You can turn around and sell it a year from now for about what you paid for it ... plus you get to keep everything you find.

Most new people will be disappointed there first time out.
After reading all the hype and seeing all the treasures posted they think they will find gold and silver coins quickly.
It dont work like that and it takes a lot of time to understand your detector and where to look.
Not saying someone could not be lucky enough to walk right out to a beach and find a gold and diamond ring worth more than they paid for the detector.
It can happen ... but rarely does.
Those that find the most are out looking the most and they are hunting in places where the good stuff is most likely to be.

So the point is ... dont think you need to buy a simple detector as your first one ... However, even the simple ones do find good things.

Make that 2 of us! Id put my V against your V3 any day ESPECIALLY just coin plinkin, lololol! I have a couple years on ya but I aint no vet yet.
...anyway,not to derail your thread, My first detector (yellow thing) had a screen,I regretted not getting the silver umax within a month. Have him go with the Compadre or silver, that way he'll learn what hes doing.

"A friend of mine is getting serious about detecting."

Then the Golden is a great choice. Even though the learning curve may be a little difficult, he wont have any problem getting the hang of it before too long. He wont regret the buy.
