What the heck is this thing?

Found this at an early 1800's site, not too far from an 1811 Large Cent.

I think it's made out of bronze.

It's approximately 6" long. (forgot to add compare item in photos)

What is it??

I considered that but... it doesn't really feel comfortable in your hand... and I don't understand the handle part if it was a shoe horn.

I think diggummup got it right . With the square part at the top for the strap and the missing part mirrored by the part that remains, plus the flat part for the shoe/boot to rest on, it looks like a stirrup.

Now, if only it could talk. When was it born? Who made it? Who used it? Who broke and lost it?

Questions that will remain a mystery... it's the newest addition to my personal museum.
