This is a big chunk of soapstone an archy friend of mine gave me. He said it was a crude shallow bowl with handles, possibly unfinished, found near a soapstone quarry in C.T. I also have local fragments, chunks in a drawer somewhere.

Idk really, whatever it is its hand carved and broken, as far as the age no clue. Whatever it is I like it and it interesting, and unique

This piece reminds me of a broken Greek sculpture. I know nothing about pipes, but isn't it to thick to be part of a pipe. I suppose it is possible that it is a broken trinket. I find all sorts of stuff in fields. Some of it makes me think what in the world has gone on here. I found a steering wheel to a car once. It still had the Nova emblem visible. I think these oddities pop up because trash pits are somewhere close. Yours does look like the same material trade pipes are made of.

My only problem with that is, wouldn't it be a trade pipe made of that material. I have never seen natural stone like that in the fields around. Would trade pipes be carved here in the new world, or in the old country?? I'm asking, I don't know.

I don't know the slightest tid-bit about pipes. Is it made of the same type clay as your other trade pipe? I noticed the color seems right for a trade pipe.

Haha..everybody seemed to have passed by what the Viking said.. "meerschaum" almost positive that's the material. Wikipedia gives a good description

Where is alligator? He would know if trade pipes were brought in from Europe, Spain or where ever, or if some were actually carved in our area. If that is part of an incomplete trade pipe, that is super cool. It is a sign of white man and native siting together carving. An art competition. At the end, you trade off give each other five, blaze the pipe up, compliment on how well the pipes smoke, then roll on out. Lol, that's my vision. Might go to Hollywood with that one.

Yes, I saw what the Viking wrote. What I want to know is where, not what, but where were trade pipes made?? In the new world (America) or the old country (Europe). Seems unlikely a partially carved pipe would be in a field if they were carved In the old country. I thought that I had read of companies associated with certain designs on trade pipes. If I didn't make that up ( and I may have) it would make sense that the company producing pipes would be overseas.

That's not plastic. Johnathan has been around a bit dude. The earliest trade pipes were made in Europe and carried over seas. After settling in the new world they started producing them here. The ones in my photo came to Florida from England. Eventually a major pipe producing company was built in Ohio that produced more clay pipes in the early 20th century by far then any other company.
