I found this close to where an old country store was in the early 1900s. It is copper with hinges and latch of chromed steel. It looks as if the whole lid was chromed as well. It is 10.5" x 10" with a lip 1/2" from the edges of the inside of the lid. There is the number "12" on the latch and makes it look as if the latch was at the top with the hinges at the bottom. There are no other marks, but indications of a paper label on the inside of the lid.

Looks like part of an old file box door of sorts. I've seen such "hinges" where there was no pivot pin, but rather the tabs on the hinge piece would fit into slots in the body of the file box.

If not for files, maybe for tools? A specific tool, maybe?

Then again, they still make hinges of that design where the tabs wrap around the hinge pin. But as it is copper, I'm at a loss.

On closer exam, the hinges and latch are made from a non-magnetic chromed metal.
