Point taken down to a scraper? Central VA James River low grounds. Looks like chert to me. Side-view photo won't upload but the smooth side does have a very slight concave shape at the tip

Agree with Tdog. Looks like one made from the beginning as a scraper, not worked done from a point or recycled. Known deposits of white chert near you are the Bourne quarry in western Hanover and the Cattail Creek/Williamson chert in Dinwiddie, some of which is white. I think more likely is that it is just one little piece from an unknown source that fell into the river at some point over the eons and got mixed in with the quartz and quartzite cobbles, then a lucky knapper just happened to find it. Must have been a guy that had been married a while because he had sense enough not to waste in on a point (which he could make out of anything) but instead made his wife a fancy scraper. I bet she was very appreciative, which, ultimately, was good for him!

Thanks for the reply Keith. You very well could be right about from where it came. Looking through the river rocks that collect in the rapids one can certainly find a variation of lithic material. In the creeks it isn't uncommon to find nodules of jasper even--but they don't get that big often. Don't think I found chert in our creeks so I like your theory.
