These are just idea's you could check on,red garnet or red obsidian.See if the area you are in is known for these things.

it is a carnelian agate...very common in your area...i find them all the time.

Agate was my initial thought until someone told me they thought it was petrified wood. Thanks! I should've known to trust my instincts...
