Wheats, Merc's, War Nickel, cuff links

Last Saturday I went to a family reunion and was talking with a cousin about his house. I thought the house looked like it might have been built in the 40's or 50's and have considered hunting it before but never got around to checking into it.

My cousin told me that when they had done some remodeling that they had found newspapers in the walls from the 1800's. The trees in the front yard appear to be that old too. I was pretty excited when he said I could hunt it. Then he told me he had a detector (cheaper model) and had hunted it without a lot of luck. He even went as far as gridding it out with chalk lines. Well I thought I'd give it a try. During the last week I made four trips there after work and again this morning for a few hours.

Every time I showed up my cousin would come out and stick right with me. He was very interested in every find and as I handed them to him he would clean them up and give me a report. Sometimes I would dig up targets I normally wouldn't have dug just to give him something to do. He is an older, real nice guy so I didn't mind.

The front yard was the most productive. Wheat’s and Merc’s were coming in at around 6-7" and the soil was soft. The first day I dug a lot of wheat’s and knew I was due for a Merc. The second day I dug two Merc's in the first 20 minutes.

All in all I managed 45 wheat’s which brings my year to date total to 131.

There were some other interesting finds. These two cuff links were pretty neat. I told my cousin he could have anything he wanted and he chose the cuff links. I gave them to him after getting this picture.

Here is some of the other stuff and a little bit of the trash.

All in all it was a good hunt but I was disappointed I didn't find any older coins. The 1943P war nickel was a first for me.

Pretty productive hunts!
I noticed the whistle in the last photo....NICE!!!

Looks good Dan. Do you mean that was your first war nickel? Those cuff links are cool.

That's a lot of wheat pennies. At least you found some mercs with them. :)

I would still go back there when the ground is saturated.

That's a load of wheats. Gotta be a lot more coins there
I agree, hit it again after a good rain

Well, I don't "always" do well. I usually only do a post when I feel I can put together an interesting story with some pictures.

Well you picked a good one!

That's a bunch of wheats! :o And those cuff links are super! Lots of great keepers coming from that place, Schrecky! I'm sure he was taking notes as you were hunting. Sounds like you both had a great time. :)

Congrats on those finds~ Nana

Nice pile of wheats, Schrecky! Great Mercs, cuff links, and whistle too. Good luck on future hunts there.

Keep digging!

great hunt ! love those wheats and mercs  and a war nickel to boot :o

Re: Wheats, Merc's, War Nickel, cuff links

With all those wheats, he must have a real cheapy detector to have missed them! At least you didn't; good story, too.

Re: Wheats, Merc's, War Nickel, cuff links

I would say finding a bunch of wheaties and 2 silver mercs and a war nickel would be an awesome day! Congratulations dude! Your cousin must have been amazed when you kept popping stuff in his front yard that he had missed.

oh wow those cuff links are cool. I would love to hunt a spot like that with a cool assortment of finds.

I prefer to hunt older homes that are still occupied. Nice digs, it's a good thing your cousin had a cheapy metal detector. I'm always asking how old coworker's homes are, and have already hit up all the friends and relatives.
