I get 2 days a year in the fields of my Union camp permission. One in the fall and one in the spring between crops. Yesterday was my fall day. Some time back, I found my first and only Hut site there, and it was a good one with buttons, bottles (broken), other stuff and 249 bullets. Yesterday I was digging for a bullet signal when I noticed campfire Ash just below the plow line. I got excited.

I started digging slowly, following the fire. The first thing I noticed were bones in the pit.

Retrieving them, I started finding broken glass.

I was sure I had another hut site, or a trash pit. But it was not to be. Apparently I found a campfire, around which some yankee boys got the better of a Confederate cow. I pulled MANY cow bones from the fire, two broken bottles, one 3-ringer, and some melted lead.

The rest of the day went well. The earlier relic hunters snagged the good stuff and left me with thousands of bucks in this field. I collected a few of them, 4 round balls, some dropped 3-ringers, 2 button backs, one eagle button, a few rivets, a poncho grommet, and the face of what I THINK is a Massachusetts cuff button. I've found Mass buttons there before. Is that what it looks like to you? I found a stranger, too. A lone grape shot. That surprised me as I have found precious little artillery related relics in the camp. Also, do you think perchance the round thing is the remains of a pocket watch? It looks like there are layers of mica on either side.

Nice bunch of relics. I bet you go on those days no matter what the weather I would Well done

Sir, you are absolutely right. I had a raging cough and chest cold, but I was there early. He harvests, and 48 hours later he's planting cover crop. In the spring, the cover crop comes off, and 48 hours later, small grain goes in. I get a day, twice a year. It's been so wet, I MIGHT get another shot at it tomorrow! We'll see . . .

Those really are interesting finds!

Nicely done, and all the best,

Lanny
