Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

I have read about 'finds' as follows:

Builders smashing walls and money flies out.
People finding a glass jar with silver dollars next to an old tree.
A museum in Florida found a stash of coins under a boarded up stairwell.

These are a few. What have you read or heard about regarding where folks hide things?

How about $10,000 in the seems of Curtain Drapes or 9 small Gold Bars behind a rock fence with a single tree growing directly behind it, or $1,200 in a book in the middle of many other books. $100,000 hidden in a Rock foundation.

My grandmother used to hide cash in an old, stale Quaker oats box, socks, freezer and coat pockets half buried in messy closet.
I could tell you MY hiding spots; but I'd have to kill you :)

I wanted to prove a point. A lot of what we believe about hiding treasure might be fictional.

Most people do not hide valuables. And I have to believe they would tell someone else in case they couldn't retrieve them.

Not to rain on anyones parade, but I actually don't believe most people hide much.

Today most people probably don't. Before banks were popular, or available, I'd say a lot of people did.

True, the average person when they get money have a need to spend it , like a trip to the doc. or to buy some medicine that they have put off due to a lack of funds.

Re: Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

Hey Cappy,

During the Depression, when so many banks failed, EVERYBODY hid their money close to home. Any money gotten "Under the table" is likely to be hidden so as to be unreportable. As was stated before, before banks became common, people hid their money close to home.It is not uncommon to hear about some old person who lived alone dying at home (two similar cases I know of). In one instance, when the cleanup crew threw out the raggedy sofa, they found over $100,000 in cash stuffed inside. In the other, there were sealed envelopes hidden all over the house with cash totaling about $60K (In NYC).

My personal experience was during a Storage Unit Auction here in SoCal. When the lock was cut and the door rolled up, there were some wood loading pallets, two folding chairs, two kilos of Cocaine, and a large stack of $100 dollar bills (they wound up being a bit over $60,000). I offered $5, but they had to call the police.

I can think of MANY examples of reasons for people to hide valuables (even in the 21st Century).

PS

Another one I just remembered: This was recent too. When a woman surprised her mother with a new bed, and mom freaked out because she said the old bed had close to a million dollars hidden in it. I know they were searching the landfill, but I never heard whether they found the money or not.

Re: Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

What about from 1933 to 1974 when it was illegal to own gold? I can imagine a few hordes being hidden then.

I offred $5.

Jeeeezuz.. are you the most penny pinching person I have ever met!!!

Re: Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

Hey, you know the old saying "It takes money to make money!", and when I think there's a good return, I don't mind throwing around the big bucks! HAHAHA

The guy kept trying to get me to follow along with the auction, but I figured he wanted to grab the cash, so I stayed right there. If he wanted the loot, he would have had to share it with me. He was either too greedy and lost it all (I stayed until the Cops got there), or he was REALLY an upright citizen (not likely).

Best-Mike
