Help picking a First MD

So I am basically a newbie to metal detecting... I had a ~$20 Radio Shack unit when I was a kid, but nothing more than that. I am primarily interested in a general purpose model, something I can use to find my car keys or pocket knife when I lose them, look for coins, and possibly try and find some gold nuggets when I'm out panning/sluicing. I came across a Whites PI, which I haven't been able to find a whole lot of info on with google, so I figured I'd just cut to the chase and talk to the experts...

SO, would this unit do what I'm looking for? the seller is asking $80, which from what I have been able to find sounds like a steal. Thoughts??

I'd pass and find something better. It would be ok for beach hunting as long as the place wasn't too junky but other venues and looking for coins, it would be too frustrating for me. There is no "one" machine that will do it all so you'll have to decide what you will most likely be searching for and what your budget is.

Thanks, that is kind of what I was thinking, but I didn't want to pass on a good deal. The truth is right now I just want an all-around unit. I realize that means it won't be GREAT at any one thing. And since thus far almost all of my metal detecting had been searching tall grass, sand or shallow mud (under 1") for keys, rings, and knives that I have lost, I really don't think I need that much ability to go deep.

Other ones I've looked at are BountyHunter Quick Silver, Pioneer 202, BountyHunter Tracker IV, etc.

IMO I've owned a lot of units. Tesoro, White's, Detectron, Fisher, Garrett, and the original a surplus mine detector! By far the one I would recommend for all around usage would be a White's MXT. A little more than most but I think you get what you pay for. The one thing I have found over the years is you will get discouraged with a cheap unit and give up the hobby. With this unit you will be amazed at how much you'll find after you become proficient with it. Read to manual and watch the DVD over and over. Good luck

At that price, it is a steal. Grab it. PI's love gold. I have a Whites Surfmaster PI and it will pick up fine gold if you know how to do it. Mine is 14 years old.

That is what i say also that is a steal get it and if you do not want it.. It will sell ..Or keep it for that price it is a old model but if it works use it at the beach. or for nugget hunting……….
