Why this river?

Not sure if anyone is familiar with the San Gabriel River/resercior but it seems like the East Fork is the place to find gold from both post here and google..

What I am wondering is "why" the east fork? There are gold mines running along many areas of those mountains. Does anyone know what makes the east fork special vs the rest of the creeks/rivers?
