Sounds like super mineralized soil and you needed to ground balance it. To ground balance, set the tip to the soil and turn it on.
If still problem try a new battery.
If still issues, call Garrett. They have GREAT costomer service.
☝🏻 Exactly this. I got into the habit of having the tip in contact with the ground every single time I turn it on when digging. That way I know reasonably well that it’s balanced at least for ground level. Then you’ll automatically rebalance as you pinpoint.

I was digging at an old spot in a field got what appeared to be a good signal, but as soon as I dug and tried to pinpoint my pinpointer just gave a slow steady beep I dug the hole wide and deep and nothing changed it was like that all around the spot Does anyone have any idea why????
Miine does something like that occasionally, I just turn it off and back on and that cures the problem.

I had one propointer go bad after about 3 years, it was falsing regularly, even in open air. Unfortunately the river took it before I could try to return it. Remember kids, lanyards are your friend.
