That is one awesome old coin! Capped bust half dimes are not a coin you see come out of the ground a lot.

If it were me I would contact my local archeologist pictures and location information. It may well have been a slaves coin, there are lots of documented cases of slaves punching holes in coins (especially half dimes and dimes) and wearing them around their neck or ankle for various reasons.

Your wife did good, she found what most of us consider to be a beautiful piece of history.

That is an incredible find! Congratulations. I am new to detecting and have not yet detected farm land. Generally speaking, do you find coins like this near evidence of a cellar hole, or are these sometimes dug in a wide open field with no home immediately nearby? How about in the woods with old stone farm walls, but no cellar hole evident? That coin is inspiring!! Thanks for sharing your find.
