Winter Preparations for Florida East Coast Beach Hunters

1. Pray for a Noreastern, a small tropical storm, or cat 1 hurricane that SITS off shore, anything bigger can go somewhere else!!!!

2. Break out the 5m farmer-john wetsuit, and put up the 3m shortie. Atlantic gets kinda cool.

3. Pick up another bottle of sunscreen, we can still get sunburned.

4. Break out the heavy tee-shirts, and shorts.

5. Switch from filp-flops to sandals.

6. Switch to 5 lb bag of ice instead of the normal 10 lb to keep drinks cool in the cooler left in vehicle while hunting.

7. New pair of sunglasses, summer ones are wore out.

8. Only charge one set of batteries for digital camera, less bikinis on beach now. :'(

Yeah, it's so sad I could cry. At least the questions about the geiger counter will be less when you out hunting in the chilly wind.

Hey Treasurehunter,
I met you at the picnic last summer and you demonstrated your bungee weight reducer on your Excalibur to me. Remember? Well I'm going to buy my girlfriend Debbie a new MD for Christmas and would value your recommendation. Do you think you could come up with what I need for her with the following :
$600 Max Budget
Lightweight
Underwater to 60 feet
Discrimination that will eliminate Aluminum or at least identify it. (I'm afraid if like me, if she winds up digging 50,000 pull tabs, the $600 might wind up sitting in the closet. LOL
Thanks in advance...Aquanut

Aquanut,

I wasn't at any treasure hunting picnic this year. I was at the Great Southern Beach Shoot Out in Daytona, but not a picnic.

I am a newbie, only been doing this for about 18 months.

If you want something that goes 60 feet, your not going to find anything that uses a display screen to identify with that I know of. Also, wanting something that is waterproof is going to mean some weight to it.

If you discriminate out pulltabs and bottle caps your going to miss some really good stuff. I dig lots of pulltabs and bottlecaps, but I also dig some good stuff to go with it.

I am very partial to Minelabs, I have 2 Excals 1000's (Excal is backup for Excal) and a Sovereign. They will discriminate out iron and will see gold sitting under or on top of an iron nail. Excal is water proof to 200 feet, and you can find a used one for $600-$800, but it is heavy.

A Sovereign is really great machine on the beach and very shallow water, BUT it is not waterproof! New about $600

I had a Whites Beach Hunter ID and I like it, but I feel the door design is poor, mine leaked, I had whites fix it and I got rid of it, but I got rid of it because of the door, not because of the way it detected. It is lighter then the Excal.

I have heard good things about the Tiger Shark, it has a lifetime warranty to the original owner, but I have never used it. I know Sandman speaks highly of it and that opinion would carry a lot of weight to me.

I know this, I will not sell or trade my Minelabs till something comes along a lot better for the beach. I am too old to dig holes to China for bobbypins so PI machines are out.

There are a LOT more people who are knowledgeable and can help you a lot better then I can.

Good luck and good hunting.

Thanks Treasure_Hunter. I guess I mistook you for another MD'r. Seems like I made a lucky mistake. Your advice is well taken!
