So we've been researching this site. We've been there before, but as I stepped out of the truck this morning things seemed to look different. I think different, because we've taken the time to read about the place. This is a large area and has seen folks around for many years, so we were hoping to find some older keepers.
First find in the keeper pocket was a buckle! Love to find these. I'll add it to my small collection for sure.

Next find was this neat brooch/pin....I am still cleaning on it.....

I find a broken buckle, and then a first for me. My first shield nickel!! :hello2:

I found this next...anyone know what it is?

Found a neat lock...

And Lisa found one that is soooo cool! It's in the shape of a heart. She also found her first V nickel. :icon_thumright: She hasn't sent me any pics yet. :-\
Found a 1912D wheat. Is the prettiest color of green and is cleaning up fairly well.

Don't know what this is, but thought it was something to take a second look at...

When did they make harmonica reeds out of lead? :icon_scratch: It's lead with the little brass/copper looking little something-or-others....
Found a toe tap, assorted lead (one's a lead seal) and other bits and pieces.
Last find of the day was a button. I had no idea what it was. I thought thru the crusty dirt I could see some initials, but didn't know what I had. When I got home, I was so nervous about cleaning it. Here's a pic with just brushing it lightly with a toothbrush....

I started getting all fidgety and trying to read what it said. :D ACC? Does it say ACC? What's ACC? :icon_scratch: OH MY GOODNESS! I knew I needed to take my time and not totally ruin something that might be good. Remembered reading on one of BB's threads not to soak it in water if it's a two piece, so I got the toothpick out and got to cleaning. After what seemed like hours of picking at it, I got a few Q-tips and dampened them. Rubbed a bit more of the dirt off and here's what it looks like....

I can read the word 'Waterbury' on the back..and there's something else there, but I can't make it out.

Happy dance occurred in the den, at my desk, looking thru a magnifying glass with a toothpick in one hand and the button in the other.

Have a great week!!

Big congrats on that ACC button! ...and 1st shield nickel! :headbang:

Well Bama Nana, your button sure looks like SU-17 in Albert's button book. The complete backmark will tell the story. If it's the CW variety, I will vote BANNER. You ladies had a great hunt.Congrats on the "V" nickels.
If that's an Alabama (University) Cadet Corps button, just mail it to me for my CW collection because I know you are a big AUBURN fan. Super Finds. HH, Quindy.

Great site, great finds. Research pays off once again!

I think you whatisit is a sheet music holder too....just got beat to the punch. Cool finds!

MM,
You must've played an instrument in high school. :) You hit that ID of the lyre dead on.
-Buckles

BB,
I got lucky this time. I was just looking through Crouch's book yesterday & remembered seeing those.
The only instrument I think I've ever played was the kazoo? :icon_scratch: :tongue3:

Nana,
I'm headed to work right now, but I can't wait to get home and look at you finds again and see what that ACC button is. Congrats to you both on a super hunt. I think that whatsit may be one of these I spotted in Crouch's CW relics book. It says it's a "music holder that attached to instruments." What do you think? :icon_scratch:
Back later,
MM

Dang, I knew it a lyre when I saw it...I glanced back at the time this was posted, hey I was still getting my beauty sleep. :tongue3:

Yep, I played in the band so I knew what it was. :laughing9:

Nanabelle honeychile, I have to tell you like it is, you're just making me drool all over my keyboard with those finds. W :o W  Are you still sitting on cloud 9? :laughing9:

 RR

Nana,
I'm still drooling over your finds. What a great variety! I'm never seen an old lock with that unusual front piece. :icon_scratch:
That's the first ACC button I've seen too. I had a hard time even finding it in the button books. Once I figured out the "A" was from Alabama, I was hot on it's trail. :tongue3:
Can't wait to see your next hunt from that spot. :icon_thumleft:
-MM-
P.S. I would look good wearing that brooch don't you think? :-* ;D

those are some awesome finds. Congrats on your first shield nickel. I think the button should be on the banner. It is a special button.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeet hunt Nana !! Grads on another first...... :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

WOW Nana! It's been a long time since I've been on this site; you've come a long way from finding all those old nails! Great finds and I love that fan broach!

Vicki

Wow! Thanks a bunch, ya'll!! :icon_sunny: We had a lot of fun yesterday. It's rained all day today and prospects for hunting tomorrow looks mighty slim. More rain. :-X
Thanks so much for the ID's! You all are the best! I did try to read up on the button before I posted it, but without being able to read the back, I wasn't sure if it was going to be an extra special find. I've been cleaning on the back of this button off and on all day today. I am officially down to my last toothpick. :P :D PALeeeeese tell me you can see the writing! :D

I'll have to find some of the aluminum jelly, BB. I assume it can be purchased somewhere like Lowe's? Home Depot? I can see some of the gold under there. If I try the peroxide first, will it hurt for the entire button to be submerged? Thanks, BB and Iron for the cleaning tips. :)
WWW...YES! There's lots of trash here. But mostly iron. (horseshoes, broken cooking vessels, LOTS of nails!)
Burt, you're too kind! I think I'll keep this one. ;D And thanks ya'll for mentioning the banner, but I'm sure there are many others here more deserving. :icon_pirat:

Good to see GreenOne and Vic posting!!! Thanks for the kind replies!
PS..Vicki...I still find nails. :P :D

PSS... You'd look stunning, I'm sure, MM! :-*

Oh..and Rob...hope your snow is gone soon! I don't know if my luck will last much longer. :D

Thanks again ya'll!

Nana :-*

Wow Nana, what an great pile of finds! :icon_thumleft: Love the ACC button and shield nickel. Congrats on your first! (I'm still waiting) That fan brooch is awful cute, too. Nice digging!

HH

Nana,

If you use peroxide, be careful not to let it soak overnight. Get one of those candle wax heating plates and use a coffee cup for the peroxide to stay in. It works real well and doesn't get too hot but keeps is just right. You can find the aluminum jelly at Home Depot or Lowes.

Good luck,
Steve ;D

I believe the backmark on the button dates 1860 to 70. If the C and O for company are both capital letters it does. If it has a capital C and small o it is 1880 or so. One easy thing on the Scovill marks is if it has a Co for company it is no earlier than 1880. From what I can see I think yours is the 60 to 70 mark.

Congrats Nana on some great finds! Way to go Southern Gal! Breezie
