Last night, April 11, 2014, i hurried through after dinner chores to get outside before it got dark. I hadn't been metal detecting for a few days and I was anxious to get at it. I was searching a part of our yard that my husband had recently cleared off. I got a pretty good signal with my White's DFX, but it wasn't screaming at me. The signal was a pretty normal sounding signal and i decided to dig it. It was getting pretty dark and with my 2nd or 3rd shovelful I noticed what looked like a square piece of window glass. I reached down to pick it up and the first thing i noticed was the word "sterling". I shouted for my husband, who was working out in the yard, to come see the war medal i just dug. It was pretty exciting! From what I can tell, april 2014.webp it is a World War 2 medal...correct me if I am wrong and anymore info is welcomed.

I believe you're right: a WW2 Marksmans Medal for a carbine. Amazing condition! Did you double check the hole for more? You may find more plates for rifle, bayonet, etc. Also it may be fun to investigate who lived there before you and find some history of the mystery. Great find!

Those aren't necessarily WWII. Due to the pin back, it would be old, but I know that style was used even during the 60s and 70s. I am not sure if they were used past that. It could possibly be dated because I don't think that carbine was awarded to far into the future. I know that in the 70s or possibly into the late 80s the clasp was changed.

It is a Marksmanship medal. The other two are Sharpshooter and Expert. Currently, Marksmanship is awarded to shooters who qualify on the rifle from 23-29 shots out of 40. Sharpshooter is 30-35 and Expert is 36-40.
