Would love more info on this carving

[PlaneGypsy]

I have included pictures and would appreciate any ideas or information on the item.

I believe it is ivory and have been told it is rather ancient?

Many Thanks,

Wow, that's a nice looking piece. If it's the real deal you should have it appraised.

I can't tell from pictures if it is actually ivory. It has some patina on it so it 'could be old'. The characters written are Chinese. Probably a poem.

Depending on age, it could worth a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. It may be worth your time, money, and effort to take to a professional.

Search "antique Chinese ivory carvings" to see other examples.

Without in hand, I lean toward Ivory - check inside for pock marks showing bone.

Lovely piece!

A beautiful piece can you put with something for a size reference. I wonder if it isn't a carved shell of some type. Whatever material it is it is a work of art.
