My middle school aged son has been bitten pretty hard by the "Diggers" bug. I've always been a bit curious about metal detecting and after a few weeks of "please Dads", I picked up a "like new" AT Pro on the ebays and it's on it's way.

Now I have a pretty healthy dose of reality when it comes to instantly finding buried treasure, but obviously he's gonna be stoked.

Would it be a dirty trick to you know... maybe seed the yard we a couple clads, and a wheat and a silver?

I'm not talking a hoard or anythig... just say 3 or 5... pushed down a bit into the dirt?

That bad juju or just a little tiny incentive to wet the ol whistle so to speak?

(Cummon boys... help me out here, this is the first real life thing he's showed an interest in. Anything to keep him off the video games!)

Personally I don't think it's a bad idea. Just enough to wet his whistle, and let him know that there is coins out there to find. Let us know how you make out.

I would not fool the kid, let it be real

Go for it and do it - who knows there could be other good finds in your yard also. Way better than video games for sure & wish the young man many great finds with the ATP.

If you do, don't let him come here and post them :laughing7:

Plainsman, hunt the yard with nothing seeded, there will be a lot of stuff there to find. Hit the school yard and tot lots. For myself, let him find some pull tabs, and when he really finds good coins, he'll truely know how much fun it is to find something of value! HH

Remember, the road to Hades is paved with good intentions.:evil4: Bad idea IMO as it will give false hope. Better to let him know that he must dig everything until he learns the machine. Go with him the first few times as a Mentor.:icon_thumleft:
Good luck with your decision.

Years back a number of TNers made coin & relic practice gardens simply to test their equipment and to build an experience profile...

Set 6 stakes into the ground about 10 feet apart to make 2-side x side gardens...string twine between the stakes to make separate test garden areas...

Leave one test garden virgin and salt the other with coins and metal junk...

Good start to learn the ropes...er, metal detecting...

Have a ball...:occasion14: (those are cokes)

I would say plant the coins but tell him you have done so and he's has to find them for practice and to help him learn how to use the detector.

Love the Test Garden Idea!!! We learned the Hard Way But it so much fun!!! Hope you Both Enjoy the At Pro HH Chug and Red

Would you let him win at chess, pingpong or basketball?
I like firemac's and AU Seeker's ideas.

Build a test garden with his help.
An event comes to mind about some one seeding a yard without my consent when testing some one else's detecting ability.
I had(key word had) a nickle marking a deep non detector type cache.
I have not found the cache , but found a couple coins that were not around before. Pretty sure who found my preferred nickle and it was not me. .:laughing7:

We are still here sent a PM

Well gents... I did NOT seed the yard. We got the AT Pro in today... and as soon as he got home from school the first thing he did was take it out of the box, slam some batteries in there and off to the front yard he went! Haha..... we fiddled with it a bit as I've never detected either, and after reading some stuff on here earlier, I put it on Coin Mode for him and away he went.

Here's his finds... most of them at about 6 inches. It's been pretty nice in Minnesota and we're thawing nicely. He thought it was the greatest thing in the world. Told me it was a lot harder than he thought it was going to be but, "man it was worth it dad!". Haha....

Here's his finds for about an hour and a half of getting after it. Probably only searched a 30ft/30ft section of the yard so far and loooots of sign. The house was built in 1976.

I think he's been bitten guys! And knowing nothing.... I think he did pretty good for the first time.

PS... my AT Pro should be here Monday! :icon_thumleft:

Good call on not seeding.

Nice to see my son is 11 he likes it but gets tired sooner than me so mom comes and gets him.if we're far away he brings his BB gun and shoots cans it's great getting them out

Off to a good start I think

Yeah... they are the same age. He had fun and is still pretty excited.

We may have to try playgrounds and beaches to make the digging a bit easier.

Most yards are full of all kinds of stuff. No need to seed. When I got one for my son, we slammed in some batteries and he went to the front yard and right away found a 1972 penny.

Enjoy it while you can. Too soon they grow up and get interested in "other" things. I got about 4 years before he lost interest.
