Would you spend $1500 on an eTrac or a pair of x705's?

My sons (ages 10 and 13) and I love metal detecting. I recently got them an Ace 250 and we've had a blast. Looking ahead, I was considering getting "the ultimate eTrac", but as you know, it's $1500.

I was just wondering if it would be best to get the eTrac.....or maybe a pair of x705's.

Your thoughts please?

Thanks!

I owned an E-Trac and it was a great machine. But I really was envious of all the guys finding gold rings in the water so I got an Excalibur II 1000. Sold the E-Trac and never looked back. I do hunt land with the Excalibur II 1000 and now it is my only machine.

The Xtera 705 is a good machine, but not anywhere near as good as the E-Trac. I have friends who have the Xtera but they say they wish they had an E-trac. If you are going to hunt land exclusively, then the E-trac is the way to go. It is just so good that I can not think of anything to say against it..

Never used the Etrak but it may have capabilities beyond new users patience to master. MY first detecting partner bought a Explorer, top notch unit but after a year sold it and never detected again. It has a long learning curve filled with frustration for beginners. My X70 has more capability than I can use but is still pretty straight forward to use. But that's just me. :)

This is simple. If you're getting it for you... the E-trac for sure. But for them, no question the 705s.

You have to think of the boys first...............I know.

One online dealer thinks the E-Trac is too complicated for many & suggests reading the manual online before deciding. I have a XT-70 & it is OK except most nickels ID as pulltabs and my deepest coin with it is 5" as I use sensitivity 22 or less. Turning up the sensitivity more results in confusion for many. But relatively easy to use sens 22 or less, single tone selected & all but coins notched out. Not too heavy with stock coil. Minelab has Safari for $1K.

I have a Fisher F70 that I think is somewhat better than XT-70, $649 new or $400-$500 used. The depth reading goes to 16" but hard to find anywhere max power can be used. Also, it requires some understanding of relationship between threshold & sensitivity settings. The $279 Teknetics Delta 4000 is somewhat better than Ace 250. The $499 Fisher F5 is pretty good. Used detectors for a few hundred offers many dozens of models. New Fisher Gold Bug with 5" & 11" coils for about $650 said to be one of best.

But if you definitely want to go with Minelab, ignore second paragraph. HH, George (MN)

Let me clarify something about my original question: I'm not asking whether to get myself an e-trac or get my kids a pair of X705's. I was talking about either getting an e-trac for all of us to use as a family.... or else a pair of X705's to use as a family. Is the e-trac REALLY, REALLY worth the extra $700 over the X705?

For you, as a long time unit if you are serious about detecting.... Yes. For fun with the family... No. The 705s will do everything you will want a detector to do for the purpose you are buying them. This is probably the easiest question ever, and if you're not trying to talk yourself into an E-trac, get the 705s and start hunting!

definitely get the two 705's. They're really nice detectors and the kids would have more opportunity to swing rather than dig.

I have the 705 and find coins and relics at 10" or better. When conditions are right of course.

A pair of X-70's will really tear up a hunting spot.

I say get two and have some great family fun.

NO. X-terra "505's
You're in Mississippi. Your paying extra for the gold prospecting option. The 505 is very sufficient for your needs in MS. 549.00 vs. 698.00

Let me know if I can help you with ordering.

I think it is nuts people keep saying the etrac is hard to learn, you can take it out of the box put it in coin mode and start hunting instantly w/o changing a single thing, and be able to dig DEEP coins. I have had mine for a lil over 3 months and I can honestly say it is a SIMPLE to use machine.

I don't think it's hard either, but that doesn't have a whole lot to do with this thread. When buying for family use buying two mid. line units over 1 higher end is going to win it every time.

I'd rather have one good one worth $1,500 than 8 that are about the same and costing much more.

I just received the e-trac yesterday, turned it on today and found three wheat cents in about an hour. Seems to be easy to use and an awesome machine too! If the boys will have more time to detect get the two machines though.

Honestly, I'd look into getting a pair of lightly used Explorers
