A buddy gave me this, story his dad had been told was his grandfather recieved it in L.A. while being shipped home from the Pacific in '45. The graphics are clearly depicting WW1, the doughboys helmet, bayonets & barbwire of the trenches & two bi-planes. It seems to be made of light silk or possibly rayon. Can anybody give me info or a site that might have it? Ive looked all over on the net & am completely stumped as to the age of this thing. Im thinking it was a WW1 regimental reunion banner from the 30's to the 50's held in Los Angeles........ ??? :-\

The slogan "Welcome Buddies" was used in WWI and WWII. Im going to guess WWII in the Pacific on this one and they are not oriental. http://tinyurl.com/23c6fag

Good post BigCicon_goodpost.gif
Here is a "Billboard"magazine from 1942 that mentions "Welcome Buddies" banners as being popular, read "Banners are Banner Mdse."--http://tinyurl.com/2465d4u. Although that doughboy helmet and the biplane sure looks WW1 to me. I gotta go with that too AP. Nice item.

Here is a WW1 celluloid pinback on Ebay- Note- the guy could be a twin to the one on the banner (or at least a close relative!) LOL.

Don't get to hung up on the helmet style being WWI, the M1 was not introduced until 1942, so the m1917 was still a common image and in use throughout the war by auxillary units

Yeah your right. Biplanes were also used in WWII so I guess it could very well date to WWII and not WWI.

Somehow the small soldiers to the left going up the hill seem to fit more with a Pacific theatre.

Thank you for all the info! The guys on the left have doughboy helmets & bayonettes, the barbed wire really gives me the WW1 feeling, trenches of France, but the pacific is a posibility. I think Lucas' comment struck me, I had not looked at it this way...........banner was done by an artist, not a historian. Now Im even more confused as to the age. LOL! :icon_thumright:

There's no telling where it came from or how old it is unless you have somebody who actually knows it's history to talk to about it. I own a sign shop specializing in hand painting and wide format printing, and do retro stuff like that all the time. About the only way I'd be able to even begin to try to determine an age of the stuff without destroying it would be to take some folds of it in my hand and smell it. If it had a good musky smell, I'd guess it was old. If it had a crisp smell to it, I'd guess it was new. Old or new would be about as acurate as I could come up with. That design could have been hand painted in 1930, or yesterday. Art is ageless and can be reproduced at any time. That picture that you posted is good enough that I could recreate the exact same thing for you and make it look identical by the time you could drive to my shop to pick it up. In fact I'm snaking it for my archives in case a customer ever wants something like it ;)

Ive actualy framed it & it is hanging in my work office.........Im looking at it now. ;D Dont see any print or writing along the fringe at all. I dont know the difference between silk or rayon but it appears to be silk.......... :-\ Could very well be from the 50's or 60's, my grand dad fought in the great war & lived til the early 90's. Thanks everybody for the input! :icon_thumright:

For those looking for banners to be replicated SignsNY does a great job with this and at affordable prices. They are located in NY and are a professional sign and vinyl banners company that have been in business for years.
