My son and I have dug a LOT of bullets in wood over the years but I finally realized the source of most of these. I previously believed they were likely from trees that were hit during a battle. I dug these however in a trench and it struck me that they probably had hit the head log that was used to protect the men in the trenches as it lay along the top parallel to the trench line. can't prove it, but it seems sensible. don't know why it took me so long to figure it out!
The position of the bullets in the xray don't correspond to their position in the picture at left, and I didn't think I needed to xray the lower left one!
