I went to a tot lot yesterday that used to be an old house lot. I was expecting to find some common clad and get to know my MXT better. The first target was a piece of junk wire. My second target was a penny, about 4 inches or so down, right next to the slides. I couldn't see the front, and the back looked like a wheat. Sweet. My next find was my first ring.....OK, it was a tot ring but a ring nonetheless. I found a few pennies, one canadian, a dime and a nickle. Lots of junk hits with a few square nails.
I wanted to clean the wheat cent so I could read the date, so It's been in peroxide for the last 20 hours. I keep looking to see if its clear to read, and Yaaah-Hoooo, it's an INDIAN HEAD. Still can't read the date, but it's getting there. I'll try to post a pic when it's cleaned up.
An Indian may not be too exciting for some of you that have found a bunch, but for my third time out with my first detector, I'm on cloud nine.

Stacylee, I was hunting a tot lot. You just never know what it was before it was a tot lot. This one obviously had never been hunted before.

Congrats on that first Indian! Maybe it'll be a 68, or 71!

Congrats on the Indian. I just found my first 3 months ago and I was also very excited. Mine was a 1904.

I'm afraid that if I can't remove the green patina on the obverse, I may never know what date it is. So far I can only see the wheat and the sheild with ONE CENT on the reverse. When the coin is wet, I can barely make out some of the feathers on the headdress.

very nice find!! get back to that place!

Congrats! I love my MXT. Did you use any form of low heat with the peroxide? Like a desklamp or something? It seems to work better when I use a little heat.
Happy Hunting

Congrats on the Indian. I'd take one any day.

I have found several good things in tot lots. I have yet to find an Indian though. I've been hunting for 5 years.......so BIG Conrats on your first!

HH,
Moon

Congrats on the IH. I've found a couple in the wood chips, and figured that kids probably brought them for show & tell and then lost them.

I've been diggin' Indians since the late '60s & believe me, you never get over the thrill of unearthing coins of that era.

And if you do, get another hobby!

Nice find. Hope you find more.

Very nice finds

Thanks all. I put the penny in a potatoe for 26 hours total. No real improvement. Should I continue or accept the fact it's too far gone to read a date or see the injun? :'(
